WEAKNESSES

Footwork and technique are a mess. Plays with inconsistent base width and overall balance. Struggles to keep feet clean and ends up on the ground. Lines up in narrow, three-point stance from interior and struggles to fight back against down blocks and double teams. Can be washed out of his gap too often. High center of gravity made interior work a challenge at times. Can bend, but lets high pad level get the best of him. Doesn't consistently utilize his length with first hands. Has to become better at controlling the point of attack with his natural attributes. Needs to punch and control rather than leaning on blockers. Production doesn't match up with the traits and the talent. Scouts concerned about work ethic and leadership.

SOURCES TELL US

"He has a chance to be a dominant player in our league. I mean dominant. It hasn't turned on for him all the way yet but if it does, he could be like Mario Williams. He's just a little lazy and I worry about whether he is going to be a self-starter." -- NFC North area scout

Yep, work ethic and coach ability issues seem to be a very prevalent trend in busts. All the talent in the world, but little to no desire to maximize it.

If those rumors are true, pass. Them again, everything that gets leaked leading up to the draft has to be taken with a healthy does of skepticism.

Any MSU fans around to weigh in?

McDowell is just going to be another prospect that I have to list as to what Gettleman could've done differently in a couple years.

Which will be followed by the always lazy and classic "hindsight is 20/20" post.

Anyone who actually knows what they're looking at can see the potential McDowell has and the headache this guy was for opposing lines.

As probably one of the few huddlerz that actually saw the kid play. I can tell you he is a great kid.

He is extremely coachable, and he took in 2 of the Freshman DL guys into his apartment to help with their transition into college football. He is a leader, and was a Captain even though everyone knew he was leaving after this year. He even tries to help with recruiting. The kid bleeds Green and White. And will do the same for what ever team drafts him.

He has a non stop motor, and will chase the ball all over the field. He uses leverage well, even at 6'6 he can get under the OL to make plays. He is quick for a big guy, and is faster than most guys his size.

He is a model citizen, and is willing to do whatever is asked of him. With nothing but Fr. and So. on that line he played extremely well. Even when doubled he gets into the backfield. And until the last few games of last year he has never missed any time to injury.

Of course you can find negatives on him. He isn't perfect. But, for what we need, he would fit in well for us. He can play all 4 positions on the line, and play them well. He does have a spin move, but for some reason has never used it. I think he relies on his hands to get him out of trouble, so he has yet to develop any extra moves. But with his talent, he should be able/willing to expand his repertoire.

As a Michigan State fan, I have seen plenty of players go to other teams for whatever reason. But Malik is a player we can use. And it would tickle me no end if he wound up here.

Any chance he is available at the 40th pick?

I'd pass if he is.

Athletic gifts but no effort. Don't want someone who's just gonna be a lump of muscle on the field.

EDIT:

If what Hubby says is true, and the media is overblowing his "issues", then would not mind him in the 2nd.

Question then, Hub.

Given what you know of him, any idea where these knocks are coming from?

In the three years Malik was at MSU, I never heard anyone call him out for effort. MSU Coach Dantonio has called him a perfect player because he is always prepared. Malik just doesn't do shortcuts. He prepares and practices like a leader should.

I have no idea where the lack of effort knock came from. Because it just is not true. Now at the end of last year he was dealing with bad wheels. So his play did slip some. Maybe they took those two games and decided that is who he really is.

But if he is on your team, you are going to know exactly what you are going to get. A player that will be prepared both physically, and mentally. He is a leader. He will not need anyone to babysit him. He will come in and work right from the start.

And...He got better every year. I would expect that aspect of his game to continue.
