FREE AGENCY:

See if you can coax NT BJ Raji out of retirement. He wanted to take a year off and we were interested in him as UFA last year.

Sign SS Daimion Stafford – 2yrs $6

Sign OT Manelik Watson – 2yrs $9

Sign DE Jabaal Sheard to replace Addison – 3yr $18

Sign RB Lance Dunbar – 1yr $2.5

Sign TE Logan Paulsen – 2yrs

Sign CB Asa Jackson – 1yr

Signing all those players means we won't get that compensation pick for Addison.

Good point but keep in mind we will also lose multiple players to other teams. Guys like AJ Klein, Wes Horton, Ted Ginn, Leonard Johnson. And Gman will no doubt sign a few vets that will be cut instead on UFA's. Either way, I think Mario moves on.

Scott -1.5

CJ  -3

Norwell 2.3

Philly 1.5

Remaining Cap 28

I like who you cut / keep. My free agents are:

Peppers 3

Captain 3

Riley Rieff 10

Jahleel Addae 5

That leaves $7 million in the bank for UDFA, replacement players, maybe even a mid-level slot receiver, etc.

I draft:

#8 - Fournette ( I am finally getting on board with this)

#40 - Antonio Garcia, LT

#72 - Gerald Everett ,TE

#99 - Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE

#107(ish) - Ryan Switzer, WR/KR

#143(ish) - Sam Rogers, FB

#175(ish) Zane Gonzalez, Kicker

Fug a compensation pick. This strategy of handicapping ourselves in the present for the hope of a possible comp pick in the future is beyond idiotic. Field the best possible team you can and let the chips fall where they may.

It is also hard to bring in compensation picks when you are drafting fewer players than any team in the league.  I wish I could find it again, but I recently saw a stat that stated, since Gettleman has been our GM, the Panthers have had the fewest number of draft picks in the league.  I think something like only drafting 21 players since 2013 (4 drafts).

Again most are forgetting the insurance fund for the season. I believe the panthers carried 20-/+ into last season, after all injuries they ended with 13 million. You got to account for around 10 million or more, cause of the roll over factor. Even in those cap hell years, Dave carried 5 million into the season.....Member the upcoming contracts too. Two 10 million OG, 10-15 per WR, rotation DE, two 15 million per DTs, etc etc. The 50 million in cap space, is not 50 million.

We have no WR who is getting 10-15M, Star won't get close to 15M. Not concerned with Kony at his current level of play. And I doubt Norwell gets near 10M.  Plus, Stewart, Davis, and probably Olsen and Kalil will be off the books in those years. We have plenty to try to fill a couple needs before draft, with high quality talent.

My take would look like this

Cuts:

DT Soliai, TE Dickson, FB Tolbert, QB Webb

Cap space: 49.1 Mill (draft pick money already subtracted)

Re-sign:

Corey Brown WR, Chris Scott OL, Andrew Norwell OG, Charles Johnson DE, Kyle Love DT, Colin Jones S, Lou Young CB

Tagged: KK Short DT

Free Agent Signings:

Kenny Stills WR 6 mill/yr (5 yr)

Tony Jefferson SS 6 mill/yr (5 yr)

Calais Campbell DE 8 mill/yr (3 yr)

Cap Space remaining: around 4 to 5 mill

Draft:

1st) Leonard Fournette, RB

Top need besides OT is RB. We need a future JStew replacement as he crosses into 30.

2nd) Budda Baker, S (DB)

FS that can fill in for Kurt and be the future replacment. Also very versatile and brings speed with his passion.

3rd) Antonio Garcia, OT

Need depth and a future possible LT. Oher is 50/50, time is now for the training (should have been before Byron Bell time)

Comp) Tanoh Kpassagnon, DE

Raw but under CJ and Calais Campbell, Tanoh will be a force to reckoned with in the future.

4th) Julie'n Davenport, OT

Intriguing prospect with excellent arm length that could provide quality depth for the future.

5th) Keionta Davis, DE

Future edge rusher to replace Mario.

6th) Michael Rogers, TE

Potential and hidden gem in a stacked TE of talent in this draft.

Roster:

QB: Cam, DA

RB: JStew, LF

FB: Devon Johnson

TE: Thor, Michael Roberts, Simonson

T: Oher, Garcia, Daryl Williams, Davenport

G: Norwell, Turner, Scott, Yankey

C: Kalil, Larsen

WR: KB, DF, Philly, Stills, Byrd

DE: Kony, CJ, Campbell, Tanoh, Keionta

DT: KK, Star, Butler, Love

LB: TD, Luke, Shaq, Norris, Cash, Mayo

CB: Bradberry, Worley, Young, Sanchez

DB: Budda Baker

S: Kurt, Jefferson, Boston, CJones, Blechen

K: Gano

P: Lee, Palardy

LS: JJ

I would like to see on passing down situations where the opposing team's QB faces

Monster Line package: KK - Campbell - Tanoh - Butler (try throwing over pass blockers in the middle (6'8") and very quick DTs on the edge.

Or

NASCAR package: Kony - KK - CJ - Keionta

The Panthers currently have 49.7 million in cap space.

The rookie pool is projected to cost us 7.8 million.

This leaves 41.9 million to use in FA.

QB Derek Anderson         1.7

FB Mike Tolbert                1.7

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette "wouldn't expect" the Steelers to re-sign free agent WR Markus Wheaton.

Wheaton missed a ton of time with a shoulder injury last season and required surgery to repair a torn labrum in early January. He ended up catching just four passes for 51 yards and one score across three games following somewhat productive 2014 and 2015 seasons. Wheaton just turned 26 earlier this month. He'll likely have to settle for one-year, prove it-type offers in free agency.

Gman kind of guy/situation.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
