I would just like to address the tackle position first. The best FA LT and Vollmer for RT.  After that it's just a bonus. However, I would like to add a better #2 TE and a speedy WR with good hands. Just no more DTs please. This year is very important that we strike well in free agency as well as the draft to make up for last year.

Cut:

Jonathan Stewart - $4.75M savings

Ed Dickson - $2.05M savings

Mike Tolbert - $1.5M savings

Paul Soliai - $2.5M savings

Michael Oher - $2.5M savings

Re-sign (next year cap hit only):

Jonathan Stewart - $1M

Michael Oher - $1M

Kyle Love - $1M

Mario Addison - $3.4M

KK Short - $7M

FA signings:

Robert Woods - $3.15M (4 year, $18M)

We finally get a legit slot WR who has experience playing outside a well if Funch doesn't develop.

Riley Reiff - $5.95M (4 year, $34M)

Hopefully he can play LT, if not we get a definite upgrade at RT. Either way, we can't go into 2017 with both OT spots a weakness again. We can role protections and keep extra blockers in to help one side, but when both sides are weak you're F'd in the A.

Draft:

1/8: Leonard Fournette - RB, LSU

This is the new workhorse back. I don't think re-signing J. Stew for $1M would happen. In this scenario, Stew wouldn't be cut until after Fournette was secured.

2/15 (traded 8th pick for the 15th pick and the 38th in the 3rd): DeMarcus Walker - DE, FSU

Walker reminds me a lot of our own Charles Johnson who I really wanted to keep on another short term team friendly deal but it just didn't happen. I think he's a little further along than CJ was coming out of college and may be a quicker impact player. I would hope for him to push Ealy for the starting LE role as a rookie.

3/8: Jordan Leggett - TE, Clemson

We finally get a legit #2 TE to pair with Olsen and hopefully secure Olsen's successor with the same pick.

3/35: Ryan Switzer - WR, UNC

Back in 2001, the Panthers took an undersized WR/returner out of Utah in the 3rd round. Steve Smith worked out pretty well. In 2017, we do it again. Switzer should provide an immediate impact on special teams and is talented enough with the ball in his hands to warrant some immediate snaps on offense.

3/38: Daeshon Hall - DE, Texas A&M

A measurables pick. He's the prototype 4-3 DE. 6'6" 260# with very good athleticism. Definitely worth the risk at the bottom of the 3rd and even with taking Walker in the 2nd, DE is still a need. With this lineup, there's gonna be two rookie DEs in the two deep.

4/8: Marcus Maye - S, Florida

A late season broken arm will probably cause him to slip and we pounce. Hopefully he can challenge Boston for a starting spot right away. Ideally, he can play SS to allow Coleman to go back to FS where he simply plays better.

5/8: Marlon Mack - RB, South Florida

Another RB? Yep! Had to let Fozzy walk and I took Mack over Oklahoma's Perine and UNC's Elijah Hood. Why? Because Mack fits that change of pace and receiver out of the backfield role better than those guys who more mirror Fournette. Rivera seems much more committed to having that prototype feature back than Fox did who tended to platoon RBs more. If we're going to have a workhorse and a change of pace back, we get both in this deep RB draft.

6/8: Xavier Woods - S, Louisiana Tech

This guy looks like a prototype NFL SS and that's what we need. Super productive albeit at a lower level. May take a couple of years to truly see what he's capable of in the NFL, but he can contribute on special teams in the meantime.

7/8: Jalen Myrick - CB, Minnesota

One of my favorite players in the draft. Built like a safety, but runs and covers like a CB. He could potentially challenge for the starting nickelback role right out of the gate.

UDFA signings:

Cam Serigne - TE, WFU

Sam Rogers - FB, VT

Shock Linwood - RB, Baylor

Mack Hollins - WR, UNC

Sefo Liufau - QB, Colorado

Cole Croston - OT, Iowa

Jonah Pirsig - OT, Minnesota

Ben Braden - OG, Michigan

Jay Guillermo - C, Clemson

M.J. Stewart - CB, UNC

Zane Gonzalez - K, Arizona State

Two Deep:

QB: Cam, DA, Webb

RB: Fournette, J. Stew, Mack

FB: Rogers (if we carry one)

TE: Olsen, Leggett, Serigne or bargain FA

WR: KB, Funch, Woods, Switzer, Philly

LT: Reilly, Oher (if he continues)

LG: Norwell, Braden/bargain FA

C: Kalil, Guillermo/bargain FA

RG: Turner, Braden/bargain FA

RT: Williams, Croston/Pirsig/bargain FA

RE: Addison, Hall

NT: Star, Love

3 tech: Short, Butler

LE: Ealy/Walker

ROLB: TD, Cash

MLB: Luke, Mayo

LOLB: Shaq, Mayo

CB: Bradberry, Stewart/bargain FA

CB: Worley, Stewart/bargain FA

Nickel: Myrick, Stewart/bargain FA

FS: Coleman, Boston

SS: Maye, Woods

Practice squad: Mack Hollins for sure (not certain he wouldn't beat out Philly as he would fill Ginn's pure deep threat role since I had to let him walk)

Crap...

This is good.

Really good.

Reiff won't go for that and I doubt we trade back (not DG historically)..

But I really hope this happens.

Serious question.. what round tender do we place on Norwell? I'd personally try to extend him. He's due at least a $2M raise from last year with a 2nd round tender. You might even have to give him a 1st round tender...

Him and Turner need to be our guards for the next 5-8 years. They are the only sure thing on this line.

Maybe guards are the least valued positions on the line... but these guys are solid and do not miss time.

Will Witherspoon once talked about there being guys who knew how to avoid injury and guys who got hurt by just not taking smart angles... or some such thing... I was young.

Either way...

Turner and Norwell have earned long term consideration.

David Gettleman will address each position in Free Agency.  At least those that we are in need of.

This is my ideas.

We should cut
DT Paul Soliai                  2.5
TE Ed Dickson                  2.3

We will be resigning
UFA
    DT Kawaan Short      13.5
    DE Mario Addison        4.5
    DE Charles Johnson    3
    WR Ted Ginn Jr            3
    G Chris Scottt               1.5
    DT Kyle Love                1.5
    CB Leonard Johnson    0.5
    S Colin Jones                0.5

     RFA

    G Andrew Norwell         2.3
    WR Corey Brown          1.5
    CB Louis Young            0.5

I AM NOTPRETENDING I KNOW WHAT THE GOING RATE IS SO THESE ARE POTENTIAL GUESSES

Possible FA OTs

    Matt Kalil   2.5
    Possible FA DEs

Chander Jones OR Mario Williams 7.5 (once again guessing here

Possible FA S

    T.J. McDonald 2.5

First, the cap is 35M more than 2014. And in 2014, there was another solid option(Albert), plus 3 top LT prospects in the draft. This year, there is no one else in his age/quality range, and no LT prospects even worth a 1st round grade.

Interestingly enough, I was surprised Veldheer signed only for 7 million.  The Panthers could have afford that one, especially had we done the right thing and let Greg Hardy walk that year.  Yeah, I could see a bidding war over Reiff.

Reiff is gonna get free agent LT money.

6-8M is free agent RT money.

I would rather pay for a guy who can stay on the field. All the other LTs have heavy injury history, are old as the hills or are gonna be rookies.

As belabored a point as it is, we have too long put off addressing this in the draft, can't (and shouldn't) count on Oher to be back and a rookie will be coming into his own when Cam is getting into his 30s.

We NEED to pay Reiff. Waaaay more than we need to address DE... or any other position.

He is ready and capable now. He WILL be available and he has proven that he can stay on the field.

It is not superstars that make for a good OL (although it doesn't hurt)... it is the same 5 guys being together for long periods of time. Look no further than down 85 to see the proof of that.

Yeah we need to get Reiff here pronto.  Though if a bidding war ensues, it shouldn't go over 10 million at the most.  I will say if it took 13 million, we are in a desperate enough situation to offer it to him.

I don't see 30 million in new FAs.

It's time for Gettlemen to open up the pocket book.  No more garbage bin free agents.  He had that excuse in his first couple of years, but now he needs to use the money we've gained.

I'm assuming a 2nd round tender should suffice for Norwell.  Cost will be right at 2.5 for next year.   We will likely attempt a long term deal during training camp.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
