If you're the overall top player of a talented deep group, that says something. Yes if your system doesn't require TE to block and is heavy focused out of the slot, then a different TE maybe ranked higher. During the senior bowl Howard blew any and all personal that he crossed paths with. The fact that was quiet and did what was asked impressed all coaches.

I've been meaning to start a thread about best guesses as to whos in panthers top eight.

1- garrett

2-thomas

3- hooker

4- fournette

5-adams

6- barrett

7- Allen

8- howard

Taking in all the variables, that's my best guess.

1. Garrett

2. Fournette

3. Howard

4. Hooker

5. Thomas

6. Barrett

7. Adams

8. Allen

Wow if the panthers had the #3 overall, Howard would be it?(barring no QBs). If Howard runs a 4.4x, then he may jump into the top five. I believe he's going to be right at 4.6x, if so that would almost lock him into the top 15. He should test among the top five in all other events too, guy is a blue chipper.

Bradberry was projected to be taken anywhere from the 4th to the 6th rd, but yet, we took him in the 2nd.  Things have a tendency to change.

A few people have said similar just quoting you...Doesn't matter and isn't anywhere near the same.

The top 10 is easier to predict and get actual intel on as most teams aren't picking there and give honest evaluations to analyst  and is usually universal with a few outliers like Jacksonville/Cleveland being retarded...the order in which they get taken is the drama not who actually is a top 10 prospect and OJ isn't.

Later rounds become as much about team scheme and fit as they do player talent if you have a top 10 pick you pick the best player(QB aside).

We're not drafting Howard at 8 and only two have gone in the top 10 over the last 15 years and one was horrible and a Cleveland pick(which is to say no one else makes that pick). And Vernon Davis was a 4.3 TE...if OJ Howard runs a 4.3 we can discuss this but his HS run of 4.57 isn't top 10 material.

He will probably be a first round pick combine performance not withstanding.

I will say that the bust rate of first round TEs has been low...the last 13 or so first round TEs has been an overall pretty good set of players with a few busts sprinkled in...at worst you usually get a solid starter. We should have Hunter Henry anyway and this convo would be moot......fugin.....that one still sucks.

No, we're not.

He's not listed to go in the Top 15 in ANY mock draft worth mentioning.

Stop.

Bradberry wasn't listed in any mock drafts in the top 2 rounds...

not saying it will happen.  Just saying it can.

Julio Jones and Amari Cooper ring a bell? Howard has finished 3rd in yards and TD two seasons in a row on his own team.

We need WR help way more than TE help.

Thats 2 receivers out of a a zillion..plus cooper passes were short almost like a running back at the line of scrimmage..and even tho julio had yards the running backs were still the stable of the offense..they were not used like most stud receivers would have been..les miles and saban are coaches who get good receivers but don't use them alot because qbs are mostly game managers.

The two first round picks, like your claiming Howard to be. They couldn't pass it short to Howard?

He was used primarily as a blocker but had the ability to catch...There are only so many snaps on that side of the ball..Bama is known for there defense and running ability not air attack from the qb...if you have stud receivers that go the distance why would you use the TE when you have limited passing plays. Rbs usually get big gains and pound their way in for Tds bama scores on defense as well.

We need line help and some other outlet outside of Olsen  if he is good at both then yes. It will solve halve of the problems on the offensive side of the ball...instead of getting one player that only resolves one thing on the defensive side which is performing decent.  Our offense needs some pick me up..Fornette may be good but if stew is here i dont know how many snaps he would get.. and if the line is the same from last yr then we will be stuck in the same place.. we need help along the line.

That's the thing Bama didn't have a stud WR, so you would think Howard would get more chances. I'm not saying he isn't talented but theirs no excuses for his lack of production, there are many receivers who have been productive with terrible QB play at the college level.

Hes also not worth our 8th pick.

What do you mean no stud receiver bama has at least 1 every year ..all bama players are 5 star players or close..bama has had the number 1 draft class at least every yr or number 2...how can you produce when you are a TE in a heavy run game offensive ..Saban does not like to pass.. do you think he is going to get the ball more over the 5 star receivers.

I agree to disagree .if OJ does well at the combine or any other TE does well. I say pull the trigger..help is help if he can block and catch do it..just bc most consider TE as a luxury pick.. it does not mean it can not be a value pick..especially when you know you need line help and really there are not any tackles in this draft nor free agency ..you have to address it somehow..or we will be back here complaining about the line and no blockers..

Stewart and Ridley are not on par with the receivers of the past and niether of them are as talented as Howard. Saban knows how to use his talent more than any coach in the country. He puts up 200 yards in the NC and did nothing the rest of season, it makes no sense.

Howard isn't even the best TE this class and the last thing we need is more size allowing opposing defenses to drop a safety
