Took a go at a mock draft

I could only imagine what a really creative OC could do with that talent. I know it won't happen. I took a double take when Cook was still there and WTF, how could you pass him up. Imagine a two back setup. Cook is a great receiving back. The play calls you could make. No way to know if it is a run, pass, deep pass, screen, etc.

That would be amazing, but hopefully Jaguars go defense.

It's more likely that Ross could fall to the 2nd than it is that the UConn FS could fall to the third. He's no longer under-the-radar.

I like Ross, but after Cooper Kupp and Zay Jones were so impressive at the Senior Bowl, I could see them jumping Ross in the draft. Especially Zay Jones.

After the combine I highly doubt he falls to us in the second

So I have seen a few people doing the fanspeak mock draft simulator and figured I'd give it a go. Some how managed to end up with my dream scenario.

I know many of you don't care for small school players but Basham and Rivers were both standouts at the senior bowl and the Panthers need to come away with at least one DE from this draft. Pocic is one of the top rated centers and has been Fournette's teammate for a few years. Would be a great pick in the 3rd. (realistically I would flip the Basham and Pocic picks) John Ross may be my favorite player in the draft. Instant starter at PR/KR and may be the fastest player in the draft. If Fournette isn't there at 8 I would love to trade down and take him later in the first.

8: R1P8
RB LEONARD FOURNETTE
LSU
40: R2P8

WR JOHN ROSS
WASHINGTON
72: R3P8

OBI MELIFONWU
UCONN
99: R3P35

EDGE TARELL BASHAM
OHIO
113: R4P8

ETHAN POCIC
LSU
153: R5P8

EDGE DEREK RIVERS
YOUNGSTOWN STATE

I would actually literally be at a lose of words in pure shock of absolute joy... Id be more than happy with this one.  Ross shouldn't fall to the second but with the high emphasis on Williams, Davis, JuJu, Kupp,... Ross could instead be there at the top of the 2nd... Not completely farfetched. but not likely.

I would die if that draft happened! BTW  I would rather have McCaffrey instead of cook!

LF and CM, with if lucky AG from Troy in the 3rd. Fug throwing when you can pound and cut up defenses with the run. This would help the defense indirectly by buying more time to breath.

Eh, I thought in the end it proved that scheme and adjustments can defeat speed. Look at NE's stars from the SB and their 40 times (note that pro-days tend to be "faster" than combine):

Hogan 4.5 (pro-day)

Edelman 4.52 (pro-day)

White 4.57 (combine)

Amendola 4.58 (pro-day)

None of those guys are even close to "speed" guys. Our big, fat and slow guy KB ran a 4.61 at the combine, which is basically about what the guys above ran bumping up the pro-day times where guys notoriously improve on their combine times.

Even on Atlanta, Freeman (Atlanta's best guy in the SB) ran a 4.58 at the combine. NE won because they made adjustments to counter Atlanta and to negate the pass rush that killed them in the first 3 quarters. Then Shanahan pulled a 2016 Shula and out thought himself and didn't pay attention to situations.

Yeah but we don't have Brady or Belicheck

To be fair, it has been known that KB purposely ran slow to not be drafted high on a crappy team.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
