Leonard Fournette: Better than AP

The only thing that scares me about Fournette is whether we would evolve into the right type of scheme to let him do his thing....Like the video said, if we are planning on staying with the read option type of running game, and forgoe a traditional type running game, the Dalvin Cook might be a better option.

If we stay with that (which I don't expect based on Ron's comments) then it won't matter who we pick because it's trash. We need a traditional run game not this child offense we've been running. Fournette with Kyle Juszczyk, James Develin, or Patrick DiMarco in a traditional run game would be absolutely perfect for our team.

I want Fournette solely so we have someone on the field who will punish a defense. KB has done it maybe a couple of times, but he isn't a regular enforcer. Stew's splash plays like that seem to be in the past.

I just wanna see one of our guys throw dudes to the ground like that and drop people.

If he is there, I would take him in a heartbeat. I think the signs are there to go away from zone reads and to a more traditional power running game which he would excel in. One thing that worries me is not Fournette but our offenses ability to stick to the running game. Let's see in free agency if we pick up a good blocking FB that will be a good indication of where we are going with the offense.

Free agency will really be the sign if we are going to "evolve" or if we are going to be the same.

He hasn't played a down in the nfl ..

I think it's tricky taking a runner who is mostly known for power and predicting his nfl success. I don't think Fournette is anywhere near as shifty as AP. We will see.

He might fold like eric shelton once he gets hit by an NFL caliber player... risky to take him without a decent line....but we're going to have to bite the bullet sometime in the next year or two...

I think I liked him more before I saw the video. Do we think DG will bring in a FB? Do we think Shula will use a FB? If we are going to stick with the read-option, then maybe he isn't our guy.

I think the comparisons to AP are accurate. That said, go look at some recent game tape of AP in Minnesota's read-option offense. He looks like garbage because it is a horrible offensive scheme that puts the rb at a significant disadvantage. The rb has to stand there flat footed and wait for the ball while the LBs pursue. Put him behind a FB and he destroys.

I think that is exactly what we can expect out of Fournette.

From Rivera's interview with Nfl Insiders last week, he mentioned that he and Mike Shula talked about changing their approach on offense and they realized that they can no longer have Cam as their primary runner. Judging from those comments i do not expect them to continue to run the read option. He also mentioned doing more 2 back sets and 12 personnel and using a TE as a lead blocker.

Here is the article.

Interesting that the narrator said that plays Fournette struggles with are read-option style plays and that he excels with a fullback leading the way.

Well we're in luck because we have Shula and Tolbert!

Said if you want that read-option type back you should go with Cook.

I want Fournette regardless.

Yeah, cool. That's awesome. Excellent. If that were true, Shula would be gone. Evolving and Shula are never included in the same sentence.

See, there's a reason why Tampa and Alabama let him go.

Not getting into the reasons why he was let go or the situations he was in, but the evolving already took place with Cam.  If we get Fournette, he wouldn't be evolving, he would be getting back to his base.  And the team is already making plans to change their approach, so regardless of who ends up at RB, the offense will be different.  And this isn't solely a Shula thing, it is a directive from Rivera.

If we draft Fournette we better draft the best true blocking FB in the draft or sign one. Tolbert ain't getting it done.

I think that would be a given.  In fact, I tend to think it is a given no matter who ends up as our RB.
