What if NE had not missed that PAT?

No, you don't go for two. Your defense has been stifling the Falcons all second half and your offense has been moving the ball fine- scored on their last four possessions at that point. Why would you risk everything on one play where a drop could end the game?

You would go for 2 on the first touchdown because that gives you more time to make up for not getting it if that happened and if you do you just need 7 to tie it later. If you know you need 9 earlier you have more time to game plan for that and do what you need to do. If you're down 8 with little time left and don't get the 2 point, nothing you can do then except for hope for an onside kick. You need the 2 point either way, no reason to delay it and good reason to do it first.

I agree with this logic completely, however NFL coaches seem to normally play it the other way, I guess trying to "stay alive" as long as they can.

That is always the rub at times like these. Do you chase the points early, and hopefully get back where you are comfortable? Or do you wait until you actually need them?

If you do it early and miss, you have time to make it back up. If you go early and make it, it you are right back in the game. On the flip side. If you go for points early and miss, you are then defiantly in chase points mode. Some folks hate chasing points, others would rather do it early and live with the consequences.

I would agree that the vast majority of coaches hate "Chasing" points. You just have to play the odds. and hope for the best.

Foxy chased points in 03, and it pretty much cost us. In retrospect, it worked out perfectly for the Pats last night.

Patriots had no choice last night, though. Every coach goes for two when they did.

That's kinda what I meant when I said that it worked out perfectly for the Pats last night. After their second FG, they were down 16. Cannot get much clearer than that.

I mean, that was an amazing game. Almost verging on surreal. Down 25, needing 2 2pt conversions. Missing an onside kick. NE missing a PAT. Atl missing a PAT, then getting a second chance. Lots of weirdness in that game. I just thought it would have added to the weirdness if it had worked out just a tad differently there at the end.
