Kyle Shanahan: "I blew it."

So this was overheard in private or did he say it in public?

What else could he say after blowing the biggest lead in Superbowl history? Matt Ryan should be saying the same thing....

Sounds like this has not been a public comment.  And yea...on the play, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect Ryan to recognize an all out blitz and make adjustments?

Not so fast, sports fans. Here's some additional comments from Shanahan.

"It's not really the run-pass ratio that I look at,'' Shanahan told reporters of his decision to keep throwing after getting into field goal range late in the fourth quarter. "It's you stay on the field and you run your offense. We went three-and-out two times, which was huge. I think we had second-and-1 on both of those. To not convert on second-and-1 and then third, it was tough. That's why we let them get back into the game.''

Still incredibly dense. Denies it was a mistake to have Matt Ryan drop back damn near out of field goal range and then be forced into a pass situation where your offensive line holds someone. I hate when coaches are this shortsighted. If you just said "Yeah man, it was a tough one. I didn't want to take the ball out of the MVP's hands. We should have run the ball.", everyone would have understood and empathized. How hard is it to take ownership?

I don't agree with this at all but at least he's taking the blame for his part in it. Hindsight is 20/20. People here rip on Ron for the running the ball instead of going for the throat in situations like that. Fact of the matter is the run game was being bottled up at that point. They had just rushed for a loss of a yard. He called a passing play in order to try to get more yards and possibly first down to seal it, because the running game was no different than kneeling it.

The problem was not calling a passing play there, it was Matt Ryan taking the sack. In that situation you have to understand what the hell can happen on the play and what you can't allow happen and Ryan had a fair amount of time to get rid of the ball (more than Cam had on any single play in SB 50) and he took a sack. Not just a sack but a 10 yard sack. After that sack you needed yardage to get in field goal range again and running it wouldn't do it. Hardly Shanahan's fault that Jake Matthews held on the play. The loss is due to many different factors and Shanahan's style of offense is part of it (big plays, not being able to sustain drives keeping their D on the field) but he was not the biggest reason. Matt Ryan was a bigger reason for the loss than him. And Freeman whiffing on Hightowers' blitz on the strip sack was not on Shanahan. That's on Ryan not seeing that on the field and switching up protections and on Freeman for getting wrecked.

This

I'd take Shanahahn's playcalling any day. I'm all about aggression. Problem was execution. This is a team game and the fans needs scapegoats. I hate pointing fingers but Matt Ryan should have thrown the ball away. That was inexcusable. Mistakes like that should be ironed out but October or something. Stuff like that cannot happen in the Superbowl.

I cracked the code this morning.

Shanahan was in league with the Patriots and didn't run the ball to help them come back.  Why?  He's taking over the 49ers.   Who is Shanahan high on?   The Patriots' backup QB Garoppolo who the Patriots were going to trade anyway.  Don't be surprised when the 49ers get a decent deal on trading for him.

Patriots always two steps ahead.

What the Falcons actually needed before the sack and the holding call to put them out of game clinching field goal range was a couple Shula off tackle runs.

Of course they'd have done it back at the 15 on their own side and had to punt the ball 3 minutes earlier if Shula had called all the plays.

Shanahan also was asked about a report that cited him saying "I blew it" after the game.

"I don't know if I used those exact words, but that sounds about how I talk," he said. "...I did believe we had a very good chance to win that game, especially at the end and we didn't get it done. When you use the words 'I blew it,' I don't look at it that way, I believe we missed an opportunity and we didn't get it done. I'll go back through every play for the rest of my life."

"Yeah, it's going to be hard living with that loss. Every play that didn't work, I regret, as always. But I can deal with it because I can look at myself in the mirror and know I did what I thought was right at the time. And that was the most important thing to me. I didn't change because of a circumstance. I did what I thought was right.

Does not sound like he would change a thing.
