Kyle Shanahan: "I blew it."

Frankly though fans and people like us will criticize the move when it turns out to bad and praise the hell out of it when it turns out to be good. People in the game thread here were talking about how much it would suck to watch Shanahan and the Falcons passing the ball even while they're up instead of sitting on their lead like we did much of last year. It backfired on them and now Shanahan's the reason they lost because of that? I don't think so. They needed a first down there to really truly seal the game. There was like 4 and a half minutes left and the Pats had 3 time outs. 2 runs takes 1:20 off the clock. Pats get the ball down 11 with the two minute warning and 3 timeouts. Theoretically you don't even need an onside kick there to win it. If they ran the ball and that happened everyone would've criticized them for not staying aggressive and passing it.

The reality is both strategies can work and both strategies can not work. In this instance their obviously didn't work, but is that all on Shanahan? He's not the one who took the 10 yard sack despite having a fair amount of time to get the pass off and he's not the one who held the defender the next play. Is there blame to go around? Yeah of course, Shanahan included. But to say that he lost them the game like so many are is ridiculous.

No one play or no one call ever loses a game.  I definitely agree with you on that point.   But fwiw, it was Shanahan himself who took the blame, if the reports are correct.   If he is saying that, who are we to argue.  :)

My son made a comment earlier in the second half that Atlanta might end up regretting using all its timeouts.  I thought that was funny at the time given they had a significant lead, but he turned out to be absolutely correct.

I agree with you to some extent. But they bailed on the run too early and too often. Moreover, even if you have to pass in that situation, why not try to get your RB the ball? It's not like Freeman can't catch.

Sure, I don't think Shanny was the sole reason that they lost the game, but he played his part. So did Quinn it would seem.

Honestly though pounding the rock is not part of their offensive philosophy at all. Their running backs are utilized as outside runners and receivers more than what you need to do to sustain drives and hold the lead. So I will say they didn't bail on the run too early, they just never really had a great running game for the situation they were in. Great running backs, absolutely. But running game and ability so sustain drives? No. Running backs to hit big plays.

But I agree about targeting Freeman on the sack play, I don't remember the whole play on the sack or the routes run but Ryan had quite a bit of time before taking the sack so he didn't see something or nobody got open on the play (still should've thrown it away before taking a 10 yard sack to push out of FG position). If there were short routes and Ryan didn't see them or they were just covered then I put it even less on Shanahan but if they were long developing Shula routes then I'd put that on Shanahan.

Yeah I respect Shanahan for doing that and anyone who takes the blame for their part in it and their mistakes even if those weren't really the biggest reason. Kinda like Carroll taking the blame in their SB loss when honestly Wilson threw a terrible pass and the WR did not fight for the ball at all and it was the OC who called the play.

It's funny I was thinking and saying the same thing with those timeouts, because they burned those things fast. One was because of Ryan's headset seemingly not working based on what I saw and the other I think they were just slow to get a play off. The biggest mistake though was challenging Edelman's catch. They were in a hurry to challenge it for some reason which was ridiculous for a couple reasons. One it was a clear catch as shown by it being confirmed and not just standing. And two because they challenge before the 2 minute warning, giving the Pats an extra play before the 2 minute warning. AND they blew their timeout which would've ended up helping them quite a bit with the ball, tied and a minute left.

You run to at least make the Pats burn a timeout.  At worse you have a 39 yd fg and NE is down to 1 to. At least a min maybe 2 goes by and its 2 mins left with an 11 pt lead.

...then ur kicker does a Gano...and then we're all btching about something else... Matty choked it away....

FWIW I don't believe that the game was lost on the offensive side of the ball. The only thing that could amount to that would be to say that the offense was unable to bail the defense out after the def allowed 25 points.

But let's be real, the offense did its job. They scored enough points to win most contests, but the defense choked ultimately and allowed the patriots back in the game. When you have such a large lead get crushed it's not because the offense gave up points, it's the defense who can't stand their ground and make plays.

my $.12 opinion.

    • fug it trade our 2nd plus for Garett Wilson and sign Slayton in FA then go nuts on defense
    • It is an epidemic in the NBA. Most "teams" are a collection of selfish players who have no idea how to actually play like a team. I thought Lee would bring some accountability, but it seems that these guys have reverted back to selfish play.  SOMEONE needs to humble these idiots or this team will become unwatchable once again.
