I'm definitely not going to play under the franchise tag this year," Berry said. "I want to end my career in Kansas City. I want to play there. I love the city, I love the vibe, I love my teammates. I really look at them more than teammates. We've been through a lot and they supported me a lot. And the organization. But I don't feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year."

Berry played 2016 under the $10.8 million franchise tag, but because he and the Chiefs couldn't come to a long-term deal he didn't report to camp until Aug. 28. If tagged again he could sit out even longer.

The 28-year-old wants the security that comes with a long-term deal, not the short-term tag money, which would be worth roughly $13 million in 2017.

The Chiefs are making it a priority to ink Berry to a long-term deal.

no way in hell Gettleman gives him 5 years, 65 mil ... If he didn't give Norman (who was 28 as well) a long term deal, why the hell would he give it to Berry?

Why would he give it to anybody?? Gettleman isn't paying anybody looking for a big contract. Time to come to terms.

I understand, but money talks ya know?

Chicago will still stay within range of his market value, which we can match...if we value Safety at that price point.  While I'm sure everyone involved with the Panthers would love to have Berry on the team, I have serious doubts that they value Safety at 13-14 million (or whatever his value will be).  Gettleman believes in building defenses from the front to the back, not back to front, which would limit the value he places on the defensive backfield.

But if Gettleman does value him enough to stay within striking distance of his market value, then I have no doubt we are a much more attractive situation for a guy looking for a ring to go along with that huge bank account.  I just wouldn't hold my breath.
