Rivera: Tag will probably be placed on Short. Fa SHO.

They asked Rivera about the two running backs that we all talk about on the radio here in Charlotte and he was generally complimentary and didn't diminish one vs the other. From listening I think he likes both. He even defined "evolving" as getting more runners. So.....

Really with this style of defense you want a Peppers and Jenkins combo on the D-line. We don't have anything close to that, so it's no wonder Dave is interested in DTs. Ealy and Short is simply not good enough for our defense to be dominant, and it has to be dominant because our offense is inconsistent. I'm sure Dave is taking a hard look at the draft hoping to find a DE better than Ealy/CJ. The front 4 has to generate more pressure or we're not beating the Falcons for the South. Tagging Short is a stop gap to allow Butler another year to mature. Butler needs to become better than Short ever was to stop the musical chairs at DT.

That's probably true as a rule, but Gettleman has been somewhat unconventional to say the least. If you had told anyone that we'd have even been competing for a championship last year after 2015's draft, they wouldn't have believed it. Plus, you have to see the whole picture---if not some initial W-L results before forming any definitive judgments.

I continue to believe that we're not far away. I think with a couple of key pieces and maybe three ancillary pieces, we will be a serious contender yet again, but we'll see.

Those pieces don't happen if you continue to invest in one position and ignore others

Just because you franchise tag a player doesn't mean the extension talks cease. I'm not sure when the deadline to apply the tag is, but it's almost always before teams work out the extension.

Von Miller was franchised last year, until the worked out his extension. So to say there isn't still ''optimism'' is a bit of a reach at this point, March isn't even here.

However I think the Butler pick was made knowing we would have an easier time extending Star since space eaters don't command the money interior pass rushers do. And with Butler we also get the 5th year option down the road if he becomes a rusher on par with Short.

I think for as much flack as we give DG, he's the GM a team like this needs, he has his faults, but he's building a sustainable roster. We just need a break on a tackle in free agency, I feel good about WIlliams, but Oher's long term health is a concern, and I think Remmers returns as depth.

I don't like the fact that Rivera said "probably". I think even he knows anything is possible with Gettleman and the option of KK walking is a possibility.

One thing is for sure, for a team/GM that prides itself on the front four carrying the load, Gettleman better get off his hump and start building a stout DL.

Why in the fug is our idiot Head Coach tipping the GM's hand? There is virtually no chance Short will sign the FT in a timely matter. keep all options close at hand and available.

Who's to say he did? Gettleman very well could've told KK long ago that if a long-term deal isn't workout that he IS getting franchise tagged, no bones about it.

Figured as much. I like it. Let him play the season out under the tag and hopefully at the same time Butler develops into a suitable replacement. Let someone else back up the Brinks truck for a DT who will be knocking at the door of 30 years old at that time.

As soon as Cox signed that deal in Philly I figured signing Short long-term was a pipe dream. Hell, I think Gettleman knew it before then, hence the drafting of Butler.

Solomon Thomas would make so much sense.
