Rivera: Tag will probably be placed on Short. Fa SHO.

Hopefully he has a real agent representing him. Gettleman has already drafted a plan B so good luck with trying the leverage game. If he wants Cox money, he can wait or get a trade prospect lined up. Gettleman will probably not let him walk unless it turns toxic...as we have seen. It's not like we have a hard time finding DTs. Dude can be a stud but Cox money is not a good answer for us.

The only DT worth a top 10 pick is Allen and if he's sitting there at 8 I hope I see DG's fat flopping up and down over his belt as he furiously runs to the podium to submit Allen's name.

(P.S. Yes, I know DG isn't the one actually at the draft submitting the draft card.)

FWIW, I'm in the midst of a live draft on Twitter, and Allen fell into my lap at 8. Chargers took Barnett at 7 and it was down to Hooker vs. Allen.

Allen, all day without question.

SPOILER: Garett Bolles fell to me in the 2nd round. DT/DE jewel, arguably 2nd best player in the draft in R1, and a 5-star LT fell to me in the 2nd. R3 can't get here quick enough!

Not that anyone really cares, but just shows that anything can happen on draft day.

This just gives Getty reason to draft his DT at 8. And, you know, we really couldn't even be mad at him.

They can still get something done, and perhaps this is but a game being played out, but I'm disappointed. You never know where dragging things out will end up. Will there be a media thing?

I can see both sides hunkering down. Remember G-man's optimism that something would get done...?

You aren't going to win many championships as a GM spending 3 out of your first 5 first round picks on defensive tackles including a double dip one of those years.

Figured as much. I like it. Let him play the season out under the tag and hopefully at the same time Butler develops into a suitable replacement. Let someone else back up the Brinks truck for a DT who will be knocking at the door of 30 years old at that time.

As soon as Cox signed that deal in Philly I figured signing Short long-term was a pipe dream. Hell, I think Gettleman knew it before then, hence the drafting of Butler.

Unfortunately Short is not Cox but he will be paid like it.

That's probably true as a rule, but Gettleman has been somewhat unconventional to say the least. If you had told anyone that we'd have even been competing for a championship last year after 2015's draft, they wouldn't have believed it. Plus, you have to see the whole picture---if not some initial W-L results before forming any definitive judgments.

I continue to believe that we're not far away. I think with a couple of key pieces and maybe three ancillary pieces, we will be a serious contender yet again, but we'll see.
