REPORT: new WR coach to come from college team

Well, that's outside the box...

I was able to find a couple of former NFL assistants currently working in the college ranks, only one with any connection to Rivera (and it's a shoestring connection).

Andrew Hayes-Stoker joined Lovie Smith's bears team in 2006 as an "offensive assistant".  That's the last year Rivera was there as defensive coordinator.  He's currently coaching receivers - again under Smith - at the University of Illinois.

There's also Charlie Williams, current receiver coach for the Texas Longhorns.  He was coaching the Colts receivers up till last year.  No connection with Rivera that I can find (unless maybe via Chuck Pagano) but he's coached at schools in both North and South Carolina before.

If it's someone that's been coaching receivers in the college ranks for a while, that may be tougher to dig up.

I don't see why bringing up college coaches for assistant/position coach spots is a bad idea. Otherwise we're just pushing through piles of retreads. Our WRs are young, they could still respond well to a good college coach.

I think you guys are mistaking a fear of losing his head coaching position to another coach for wanting a staff that can remain consistent throughout the years. We've had pretty low turnover on this staff since Rivera got here. It's nice not to have to replace a whole chunk of guys every other year and I think keeping the same environment for the players is generally a good thing. You don't really want a bunch of guys gunning for HC jobs on your staff all the time because they end up doing things to put on their resume like Chud did or they end up splintering the locker room the way Wade Philips does.

It's also good that we're developing new young coaches here. They may well turn into valuable assets in a few years and we're the ones who raised them, so we have dibs on them.

There's no way to definitively say "good" or "bad" till we know who it is.

There are plenty of college coaches with pro experience.  But even if they have none of that, they may still have a good track record.

My disappointment would be that there are good, established pro receiver coaches looking for work, and there's no word if we took a look at any of them.

Heck, at this point we don't even know if Rivera interviewed anyone other than Fuller for the DB job.
