Moving Down to 12

If we trade down from 8 we have only ourselves to blame. Whoever we want to wait more picks to take will be gone and we will be fuged by another team.

we trade down and a rival can trade up to beat us to the punch.

theres no reason to trade down when we have a top 10 pick. Teams like the browns do that and think they're being nifty. It's a failing idea. You just take the guy.

What if there are 4 guys on your board that are all rated about the same?

according to the trade chart, the value of moving from 12 to 8 is 200 points, which would be mid 3rd round.  Of course, they have the first pick of the 3rd round, so it is somewhat enticing IF they give up their 3rd in the deal, leaving us with 12,  40 ,  then 3 picks in the 3rd...65, 72, and 99.

5 picks in the top 100 does make it more interesting.

Unless they're all the same position you still have a preference for one over the other. And really, even if they are the same position, you probably personally like one over the other. I'd still want my choice of the 4 instead of taking whichever one is still there.

even though we've had a bad season I still don't think this team can sustain 5 new guys in the top 3 rounds. We've already got 4 new players and can easily address most of our worst positions and that's even without FA.

Best chance of someone moving up is if the QBs don't go in the top 5.  Someone like Cleveland might be willing to jump from 12-8, especially if they think the Bills are considering a QB.

One issue we do have though is the Bengals are at 9 and a team could always trade with them for a QB.  If both teams are willing to trade down there is less chance of getting a premium for the pick.

As Bronn said 16 or 17 would get us a second but I'm not convinced those teams are desperate to move up.  Unless the Redskins were to lose their QB on the open market.

Once you get past 12 I'm really not sure how many teams are desperate enough for a QB to trade all the way to 8.  Maybe some other player will fall and teams would be willing to trade up.

Its a bit of catch-22 situation.  If several QBs go before our pick we have the best chance of getting a really good player.  If no QBs go before our pick we have the best chance of getting a good trade down opportunity.

One thing on our side is Cleveland and Cincy in same division and those teams don't help each other

According to a draft trade chart the math lines up almost perfectly for us to give

8th pick

for

12th pick

3rd rounder (1st pick of the third round)

Given that scenario we would have the 8th pick, a 2nd rounder, and THREE 3rd rounders. You can bet your bottom dollar in that scenario we would be packing some of those picks to move up back in the 1st or nab a 1st round talent in the second.

Further: lets say Adams, Hooker, Allen, Garrett and Fournette are off the board.

OJ Howard, Corey Davis, Mike Williams, and Derek Barnett could all still be there at 12- espeically considering the 8th pick would cause a run on QBs if Cleveland did trade.

I'm totally cool with trading back if there isn't a top five talent at number 8 available- and I'm sure Gettleman would too.

Nice illustration of how it could happen.  Also when people say stay put and take the player you like the most you have to consider the player you could pick with the extra pick.

Maybe you like Barnett slightly better then Howard but do you like Barnett better then Howard and Zay Jones.

I am not one to normally look to trade out of a position but the thought came about when I notice a fellow huddler mentioned it is possible all the really big names at big positions we need are gone.  That got me thinking about #12 since Cleveland has 2 picks in round 1.   For that scenario to occur Cleveland would have to pick someone else other than a QB at #1.

You know Cleveland would like a QB and if one is available at 8 they might be willing to trade up to get him.

If we were to trade down what would we get in addition to the 12th pick?  I don't have the chart that tells a fair exchange.

At 12 who would be worthy of that pick?

Or how about Joe Thomas and the 12th pick?  Would any of you do this?

Yep I like the swap of 1st and our team getting Thomas to move down. Grab Fournette at 12.

You don't trade down if there is a player you have your radar set on.  If he is there you take him but if you got four players rated the same.  Regardless of position you have to consider the chance to grab more talent.  The opportunity to grab 5 players in the top 100 is pretty damn good.

Comparing a trade down for the right reason to Cleveland is absurd.  Dave Gettleman is by far a better GM than anyone they have had in Cleveland.
