Moving Down to 12

On the draft pick value chart topic, I said it in another thread, but...

The best value for the Panthers in a trade-down scenario lies with the Ravens and Redskins, at 16 and 17. We'd drop 8-9 spots in the first round, but it would take both teams' 2nd round picks to move up. If we pulled a deal with either of them, we'd have 3 picks in the top 50 picks of the draft. That's pretty strong when it comes to bringing in good young talent. We'd be able to come out of that with probably a top 3 RB, a top 2 TE, and/or a top 5 DE. We could also snag one of the safeties in place of one of the other positions (likely TE.)

For comparison, I think there are the following number of players at each position in the top 50 prospects:

QB: 2
RB: 5
WR: 4
TE: 2
OT: 4
G: 2
C: 1
DL: 11
LB: 5
CB: 9
S: 5

Best chance of someone moving up is if the QBs don't go in the top 5.  Someone like Cleveland might be willing to jump from 12-8, especially if they think the Bills are considering a QB.

One issue we do have though is the Bengals are at 9 and a team could always trade with them for a QB.  If both teams are willing to trade down there is less chance of getting a premium for the pick.

As Bronn said 16 or 17 would get us a second but I'm not convinced those teams are desperate to move up.  Unless the Redskins were to lose their QB on the open market.

Once you get past 12 I'm really not sure how many teams are desperate enough for a QB to trade all the way to 8.  Maybe some other player will fall and teams would be willing to trade up.

Its a bit of catch-22 situation.  If several QBs go before our pick we have the best chance of getting a really good player.  If no QBs go before our pick we have the best chance of getting a good trade down opportunity.

If no QBs go before us, we will absolutely get some calls from the teams like Chicago, SF and NYJ who passed on them as well as Arizona and Cleveland, the teams who are worried about teams jumping them. It's kind of a lose-win situation. I want one of the top guys we love, but I don't mind dropping down a bit if those top guys are all gone.

If no team drafts a QB before us I'm not sure why Chicago, SF, and NYJ would call us.  They had already passed at 2,3, and 6.  They don't really have anything to offer unless we want 2018 picks.  All of their current year picks probably wouldn't add up to our 1st round pick.

I do not see a qb going in the top 6 or so that would not be a reach---we have to be looking OT and DE, and Garrett will be gone.  Buffalo is at 10, and they will probably go OT, so you risk losing a shot at Ryan Ramczyk (a player I figure will challenge the top 10 when dust settles.  Better than Robinson, imo).  However, if, at 8, DE Bennett and Ramcyk are still in play, then you have to like your odds and you make the move.  Gettlemen however, has never traded down---only up (to the best of my knowledge).

I expect that 3 QBs will go in the top 12, so this could happen.

I am not saying it will happen, but at 2/3/6, those teams may not want to pass on a top 3 for a QB. I agree that their lack of capital would make it hard to trade up to us as we aren't looking to pick up future picks, but I wouldn't put it past those teams to try and move back into the first. Jets are the least likely of the 3 because at 6, if they liked a QB they would just take the QB. I was just trying to point out that we would be a desirable spot because once you get past us and Cincy, you have 3 of 4 QB needy teams.

I agree that those teams could easily look to move back into the end of round 1.  I just didn't see why they would call us.

Who all do you think are th4e QB needy teams after our pick?

Bills, Cleveland, Arizona(maybe)?

I don't know if Arizona is desperate enough to move up to 8 yet

#8 for #12 and Thomas then take Howard at #12.

Edit: now that I think more about it, DG wouldn't trade for an OT without dealing with Oher. Oher would have to be cut before or included in the trade. #8 and Oher for #12, Thomas and a 4th round pick?

If we trade down from 8 we have only ourselves to blame. Whoever we want to wait more picks to take will be gone and we will be fuged by another team.

we trade down and a rival can trade up to beat us to the punch.

theres no reason to trade down when we have a top 10 pick. Teams like the browns do that and think they're being nifty. It's a failing idea. You just take the guy.

It's a long offseason.  I agree, very small chance we trade down.
