Let's talk Malik McDowell at #8!

I can tell by your #2 that you haven't watched any of McDowell's cut ups.

I can tell by this comment that you're one of those guys who thinks if someone disagrees then they automatically haven't watched enough of a guy.

I've seen quite a bit of him. He's simply not a 4-3 edge rusher. I think he can be a very good pro, but my god, how many three techniques does one team need?

TBH, I see your point of him getting kicked outside to DE at the NFL. If I told you there's a 6'6", 276 pound DL that is freakishly athletic, long, great at shedding blocks, constantly double-teamed and does a great job of getting after the QB, I would think you're talking about a DE, not a DT.

My biggest question is why did MSU play him at tackle rather than DE?

I'm not against this at all, but I do however think that there will be more solid, less risk prospects at #8. I like what I see and he is definitely a DG / RR kind of pick. Flexible enough to play along the line and would give them a few guys to rotate around. I do think he could flip to DE in the NFL and his athleticism is tantalizing. He was constantly double-teamed and still got a lot of pressure on the QB.

Unfortunately at 8, I would prefer Barnett.  If we were picking 12-18 range, I would consider it.... just to much risk at #8 for my blood.

We lost our 3 top DEs last year. Two to the Pros by the way. So we were using Freshman DEs most of the season trying to get them some reps, and to see what we had for the future. So Malik was played inside more than they would have liked.

He played mostly inside, but did play every Dline position. He is strong, quick, and has a relentless motor. And he is faster than folks give him credit.

He is going to be a really good Pro. I just don't see him at 8 though. Which is fine. Now if we were at 20 or so, yeah, he'd be a great fit. It's just nice to have a State kid getting some love around here.

"He's simply not a 4-3 edge rusher"

Well then, I guess if you say so.

He seemed to have no issue getting by McGlinchey in a couple of those clips.

I'm just giving you poo, man.

But no, he's not a 4-3 edge rusher. He's a 4-3 three technique or a 3-4 five technique.

If he's coachable this kid will end up being very good.

Do you think an NFL team could kick him outside in a 4-3 or am I on my own on this one?

His Coaches love him. His team mates love him, they made him a Captain as a Red Shirt Soph. He is a driven young man, with high character. And he is a very good athlete.

He has never played anything other than 4-3, and can play all 4 positions. So he would fit right in for us.

I would also add, that he was basically our only good Dlineman. So he had very little help this year. Yet he still played most of the year in the opposing teams backfield. He can get penetration with burst, and he knows how to use leverage.

But he does lack that pure speed some folks crave, but he is still probably one of the fastest big men on the field.

I love the kid.
