Tidbits of comfort from Rivera via Jourdan Rodrigue at Senior Bowl.

Jourdan Rodrigue caught up with Ron Rivera at the Senior Bowl, and after perusing the Charlotte Observer article, here is what I zeroed in on:

“There are some guys at those spots, probably the most exciting guys that you get to watch up close are offensive linemen and defensive linemen,” he said. “It’s been fun watching the one-on-one stuff, the run drill, the pass drill. There are some guys that definitely get your attention.”

He added that the style of receiver popular at this year’s Senior Bowl – speedy, small-to-midsize slot guys who can also move outside – fits with “what (the Panthers) are trying to do.” He has also been looking at a loaded tight end position as well as edge rushers – the latter of which needs to be a “complete” rusher, he said, instead of a situational player."

It's not like most of us think that Ron Rivera and Dave Gettleman are fools---and the Huddle has touched on these things for weeks---but at least we have a little confirmation as to what the Panthers are looking at.

Lineman are always put at a premium by GettleHog, and nice to know that they recognize that we need a fast slot receiver with a little versatility. Moreover, but by no means less important, this seems like the year where we will finally get a legit TE, and, if we're lucky,  an every-down edge rusher.

On an off note, from Rodrigue's notes:

The Panthers talked to TE Jeremy Sprinkle and DE Dawuane Smoot, & Cam is Zay Jones' favorite player.

Maybe Zay will become Cam's favorite receiver. ;)

I like what I'm hearing from Riverboat Ron, definitely need a slot WR to help Cam out or RB that can play slot.

Drafting a TE will help solve the OL issue.

This team has been interested in the right players but they just aren't always available when we want them. I'm sure if we had our way we would have grabbed sterling shepard, an OT, an RB, Cravens at SS, and that chargers TE from last year.

The draft position this year will put us in a position to get more of our top choices rather than picking over the leftovers who "fell" at the end of the rounds.

Zay Jones for slot receiver! That guy can run routes and catch! Perfect for complementing us and giving Cam a good 3rd down replacement for Cotchery.

Jim Miller and Pat Kirwin could not say enough good things about him today. 399 catches in college..Pat repeated that a few times.

great post, as always, top dawg

ive always thought talent evaluation was the strength of this FO and coaching staff. adjustments and in-game decision making by the coaching staff leave a little to be desired, to put it mildly

Talent evaluation is one of Ronron's weaknesses.  Numerous times we've discovered a player on the bench is better than the starter only because of injuries (Norwell, Norman are the first to come to mind).

Well, Norman was purposefully held out for so long due to his undisciplined spirit. He had to grow into his position by learning to play within the scheme and stop freelancing. As for Nor well, the party line from Ron (and Getty, I might add) is that Norwell wasn't unleashed until he was ready.

That being said, I still feel ya. Rivera really pissed me off by not giving Byrd, Funchess and Brown more snaps when Benjamin and Ginn were playing like they were taking their positions for granted. We probably should have gotten Addison more appreciable playing time a helluva lot sooner than this past season as well. When people start screwing up or just underperforming, their asses need to be sat down. Rivera takes too long to make changes.
