The Case for Curtis Samuel in the 2nd

Curtis Samuel 5'11'' 201 pounds (21 years old at start of season)

Here me out for a second....

RB is one of our needs and I know guys like Fournette, Cook, McCaffrey, Foreman, etc. are all tantalizing. If we are keen of extending J.Stew for say, another two years as the feature back, then why not get a complimentary back that fits the NFL's shift to hybrid players?

Players like Danny Woodhead, Tyreke Hill, the duo in Atlanta of Freeman/Coleman, and what Ty Montgomery did in GB this year.

If Fournette is off the board or if a player of better fit/need (Barnett, Allen, Adams) falls into our laps at 8, maybe Samuel makes sense in the 2nd.

We need a slot WR that is a burner and can take the top off of a defense.  We also need a fresh set of legs at RB to give us a potent running game again. Well, this swiss army knife of a player, from a pedigreed school that we have already shown an undying love for has that exact player.  Depending on who's available at 40, and what we do in free agency, perhaps a player like Curtis Samuel makes a lot of sense for this offense.

He's got explosive home run highlight hitter all over him. Was behind Zeke at OSU prior to this year, so his skills weren't really on full display until the latter part of '15 and all of this past season.  The jet sweeps, smoke routes and his fit between KB, Funch and Olsen would be incredible.

We do have bigger needs, so this could be seen as a 'luxury pick', but it could also be seen as a BPA that adds more to Cam's arsenal.

would much rather have other guys in the second

Edit:thats pretty vague, so specifically i would love to get LF i the first and then buddha baker in the second. If not baker, any OT or DE really.

Im a fan of Baker as well but Ron has proved over the years he doesn't want a smaller sized safety. I have doubts that he is on our board.

Good point. Could that change this year though? I feel like trends like this are formed on a prospect to prospect basic, i.e.: it is a trend and not a rule per say. I don't really keep up with this type of stuff though.

Dont want this kid

Too much of a project

He is going to have to be stricktly a WR in the NFL.  So learning routes trees, blocking etc

Kid has terrible hands.  And you guys worry abour Ginn, KB, and Funch.  Would be in a real suprise with him

I am a fan of his. He can create separation with his route running and also find open space in zone coverage.

I noticed how quick he hold the ball in his arm after the catch too. I guess he has good work ethic/attitude.

He could be a good quick pass target and safety valve on slot/RB position.

I'd rather have McCaffrey than him though. He won't be at 40.

We must improve the passing game using RBs as the threat.

FWIW with all of the John Ross love and not wanting him at #8 ---

Samuel's early combine numbers....

4.31 40

37" Vert

18 Bench

R2 selection would be fine by me.

Those times were pretty good but he also showed one of reason I don't want him above the 3rd.  He had a hard rough time catching the ball.  The gauntlet drill looked rough.  Just way to raw

Went out for coffee and missed that. Hmm... would love to see that, but also sucks that he struggled with it. Was it just bad luck, or did he look uncomfortable?

Fantastic athlete but way to big a project.  Never truely played WR more of a hybrid back.  Lineup in the back field either run the ball or motion to the slot.  Lack of knowledge of route running and route tree will be a setback.  Consistency at catching getting good a a solid hands catcher are all big hurdles.

I think most want to compare him to Braxton Miller.  But Miller made the full on switch to WR.  Always lining outside running routes.  He picked it up easily and by draft time there was no big question.  Samuel is just a great big question mark. We don't know how he will pick it up. Heck there are some WRs who have played position there whole career and still struggle doing some of these things good enough to make the league.  4.3 is very impressive,  but this league is full of athletes that you need more than athletic ability to make it
