No it wasn't. When have we ever signed guys at the beginning of free agency.? We have always waited until the second or third wave under Gettleman. Many times guys are available after the draft when teams get who they want in the draft and again with June 1 cuts. We even added guys after training camp cuts.

Free agency started beginning of march and they pulled the tag close to the end of April.  I would say that is past the second or third wave.  At that point most of the guys left you could have signed whether or not you kept the tag on Norman.

He also said he doesn't draft for need then drafted all the CBs....there is 0 chance after bradberry that those were the BPA...and even in the press conference he was just like "yea we needed cahhners" and said what we all knew anyway.

He just doesn't like saying what he's going to do, doesn't mean he will or not.

Then again...current analysis at the time and also hindsight now we know it wasn't the best draft ever...looks pretty weak overall(talking the entire NFL). So maybe they really were....as there was no way we were picking Prescott.

He should have listened to me and sign a few veteran corners and then draft the corners he wanted. We would have avoided this disaster and might be still playing this weekend.

This year he needs to sign a free agent TE and the best tackle he can get (like Kalil if available).  Bring in a free agent safety and then draft some quality players. He also said he wants to fill holes in free agency so he doesn't have to draft for need. Last year he screwed the pooch on most counts. Hopefully he goes back to his philosophy and doesn't screw up again.

Hunter Henry....man that's a miss by us for real...much much rather have him and sign Short long term....I mean....head scratcher for real even if our new DT is good it just the value sucks....Henry could have helped the offense much better than whats his name DT....can't even ahh Butler...yea Butler....much better than him in terms of value and production added.

Norman wasn't the only way we saved cap space. Remember cutting Charles Johnson and resigning him. We picked up 9 million and that was in March. Since Norman was already accounted for when we franchised him we had money money before we rescinded the tag. Plus we could have done what we did in years past which was restructure guys if we really wanted more cap space. Truth is Gettleman could have signed whoever he wanted but he clearly didn't want to and never intended to spend it? Like he never planned to sign Short unless it was way below his market value. And no Short won't be cheaper this year. PFF ranked him the third best DT in the league in 2016.

Last year was a real head scratcher across the board. Hopefully he goes back to his past formula which resulted in good results. As for Hunter I am a TE fan. I wanted Olsen when he was drafted and was thrilled we got him for a third.

I also think he was a little caught up in the moment after the Super Bowl run and maybe got a little lazy in the evaluation room.

I think he was so enamored with his past success he got cocky and played Madden just replacing vets with rookies without accounting for the loss of veteran leadership and time it takes corners to develop.  And as you say he stopped doing the hard work and finding veteran gems which is actually his specialty and what he did for the Giants.

I wish I could find the interview but there was one around draft time where he made a telling statement about how the Super Bowl run put him behind the 8 ball on his draft and FA evaluations. He said something to the fact that he was going to rely on his scouts more and try to cram the film. Well the cramming didn't work.

He spent the cap that was saved by cutting CJ, hence the reason we only rolled over $14m.

Why would any GM in the league care about not spending money?  I'm guessing it doesn't come out of their pay check.  Any decision to try and save a few million would come from the owner.  Even then the league has minimum spending limits  that would prevent them from saving too much.  The only difference between GMs is that some "pay as they go" and others leverage the future.  Over the long haul they tend to use about the same resources.  If anything the ones that leverage the future end up reducing their cap in the future because they get in the situation where they have to cut players to create cap space at the expense of dead money.

Speaking of Kalil, why are people convinced that he is an automatic upgrade over what we have?  Outside of last name and draft position is there really any tangible evidence that he is an upgrade?  I would love for him to sign for cheap and have a breakout season but I can't figure out why people are convinced that will happen.

First of all it is a spending floor not a cap floor which is a huge difference. If we give a signing bonus of 30 million to a player it all counts against the spending minimum but cap wise is prorated. So you can spend the money and still not spend the cap amount. Over the last 2 years we have spent one of the fewest amounts of cash in the league. Is it Gettleman or Richardson? Does it matter?

As for Kalil, what did folks say about Oher before he came here? Look at what we have done with nobodies like Norwell and Remmers. Kalil's was picked third in the draft. I suspect our staff along with his brother Ryan can do a lot with Kalil.
