Our Path Forward.... Free Agency and Draft

David Gettleman usually tries address each position of need in Free Agency.  Most are not to the liking of the forum, but he does try to address each of them justifying BPA in the draft.   It is a good philosophy and hopefully this year he'll drop some cash on some good upper tier Free Agents.

OT -  Matt Kalil.  Its a brother thing.  I think he would do well working with Ryan.

DT- Kawann Short,  I know he is our own but we need to do what we can to resign him.

S - Eric Berry,   Nothing else follows

If we somehow landed all three I would be ecstatic going into the draft.

From what I have read Barry is probably going to be tagged.

That said.  Both sides of the ball need to be addressed.  How much depends on who we sign or don't sign.  Oher is our incumbent LT and should return healthy.  Williams should take over the RT spot.  We'll be better in 2017 with these changes. Stewart has at least one left.

I look forward to the Senior Bowl and combine.   I am not nearly qualified to discuss college players (mostly because we just don't get enough games here to make a judgment)

I like Jeremy Picks with Adams leading the way (unless we somehow land Berry)

Berry to me is a pipe dream because I seriously doubt that KC let's him walk.

Our more realistic options at Safety are Cyprien from Jax or one of the two Safeties from AZ.

OT - Luke Joeckel is also a name you should expect on our short list. Tackle is the position that teams generally don't let go of if they're good, so any tackle available this offseason will be hella old and about to retire, or not very good, so there is most likely no long term solution for us to be found in FA.

Don't be surprised if we spend a decent bit of money on DE/pass rush specialists this offseason. There are going to be quite a few vets available that we might try to sign at lower contracts, as well as some bigger name guys we could go after too like JPP.

Berry ain't happening unless KC lets him walk, and GMan wildly overpays...aka, not happening.

 

I think we could see him spend some (if not most) of our money in the trenches. Pickings may be slim, but both lines need to get better...especially when it seems the draft could more easily help out the secondary (both CB and S), RB, and WR/TE. 

 

Basically, get vet hog mollies who at least are used to NFL play and you know what you're getting. Draft? Skill guys and potential difference makers.

I don't know what the odds are, but they're WAY more than 0%.  Pay attention or look at their situation.  They couldn't get a deal done last year and Berry was none too pleased, sitting out the offseason before having an AMAZING year.

They've spent like drunken sailors on Smith, Houston, Maclin, Fisher, Charles, Hali, Johnson, Kelce, Parker, Howard, Colquitt, AND Schwartz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  And, they have Poe, Ford, and Peters imminent or upcoming.  

If they retain Berry the cap either doesn't exist for some teams, GMan's method of roster allocation deserves a long HARD look, or A LOT of things have to give.

I'd say there is a 0% chance that they let Poe walk. He probably gets paid like a top 5 DT. That certainly could make it hard for them to resign Berry. I'd think they'd both be looking for a similar contract in terms of years and dollars. I wonder if they'd cut Maclin to make cap room. They definitely pay him more than he is worth in their offense. Maclin could look good in Carolina but I really don't think WR is a position that will be getting much attention this offseason.

Poe is a freak.  I would pay Poe over Berry if I were them too between those two but I would rather have Berry than KK, due to consistency, and us having Star and Butler, as well as our preference for experience on the back end.

Would love to see Matt Kalil and Vernon Davis. Otherwise I'm good with resigning most of the guys coming up for FA on our squad already (ie: Norwell, Short, C. Johnson, L. Johnson, etc) and praying for Jamal Adams at #8 :3

As far as the draft goes we'll probably pick up a corner in the 4th/5th round. This CB draft is said to be deeper than the 2014 WR draft. And with all these dbs declaring its shaping up that way.

Some good corners will fall, might as well bring in comp for the slot. Hell if a Desmond King falls he could push Worley on the outside barring how tall King's "real" height is.

The Vikings have no OL, a statue or a gimp for a QB, invested a top 5 pick on the guy, have no pick in the top 45, and still don't want him.  If Matt Kalil's name wasn't Matt Kalil, Matt Kalil's name wouldn't be mentioned on this board.  

If we think Oher is "OK" and/or Kalil is simply replacing Remmers, then meh, ok.

If we think Oher is not "OK" and/or Kalil is the one and only vet acquisition and we expect to plug and play him @LT without a hitch, then the potential unholy reign of terror the 2017 Panthers could deliver on this league may be over before it starts.

They have a backup QB that can cut and save $10m, that would easily get them around $14m under the cap.

If they backload Poe and Berry they could easily fit them into their cap.  2018 would be tight but then in 2019 a lot of cap frees up.  Actually they have several large yearly salaries in 2018 that they could convert to signing bonuses to free up cap space that year also to bridge themselves to 2019.

Its not just about how much space you have left but the amount of flexibility you have with the contracts you have on your books.

The teams that get in trouble are those that have no cap space plus all of the contracts they do have are severely back loaded or they have already been restructured in such way that the yearly salaries are low and therefore you can't free up cap space.

I missed this earlier but they could also cut Charles and save another $7m.  That would put them over $21m in cap space for this year.
