Peyton Manning almost (maybe a little) a Panther in 1998.

For the record, the Panthers 1998 draft:

1 (14) DE Jason Peter, Nebraska

2 (44) Choice to Miami

3a (62) DE Chuck Wiley, Louisiana State

3b (73) DL Mitch Marrow, Pennsylvania

4 (106) WR Donald Hayes, Wisconsin

5 (136) LB Jerry Jensen, Washington

6 (165) S Damien Richardson, Arizona State

7a (196) DL Viliami Maumau, Colorado

7b (203) Choice to Pittsburgh

7c (228) WR Jim Turner, Syracuse

Both the third round choices were made with Leonard Little still on the board.

The first round selection that season was famously promised to Vonnie Holliday by then personnel guy Dom Anile. Holliday was still available when Anile and the Panthers took jason peter instead.

All in all, maybe we'd have been better off if that deal had existed

I think its safe to say we didn't do a good job replacing Bill Polian. that year Marty hurney has been decent. made some very good moves, and some questionable ones. hes gets a passing grade. but i really REALLY hate that polian left.

Marty Hurney wasn't the GM that year. He didn't take over until 2002 (he and Fox took their respective spots together).

After Polian, the GM duties were split between Jack Bushofsky and Dom Anile. Neither one had the true "GM" status (one personnel guy, one cap guy...something along those lines) and that was the way the Panthers preferred it to be. It wasn't until Hurney that the duties were united again under one man.

I was tempted to make a Manning thread as a joke about how certain people trip over themselves to start threads the second they see a non-Panther do well on a nationally televised game.

Sometimes the jokes write themselves.

what does that even mean? just because you thinks its dumb, doesn't mean its not worth talking about. Why do you have to rain on my parade? not cool.

What a thing to imagine. A superb QB with the most explosive WR in the game, along with the best RB Duo in the League. Well, there's the offense.

I'm worried about the defense. I'm watching the Colts defense and wondering what the fug our boys are doing. The Colts defense are romping on Kurt Warner. They are yelling and moving like crazy before the snap to confuse the QB. Why? Why can't we do that?

Manning has had a lot of help in his development at Indy. To 'assume' that we had the people in place, not to mention the offensive system, to permit the development and maturity he has undergone isn't realistic. Remember, Kerry Collins was a 'can't miss' prospect too, and though he did have some success here, it was fleeting, and he has become a good journeyman at best. We don't know that that wouldn't have happened with Manning, or Brady, or Warner, or any other QB who might have been made available for the right deal(s).

I look at Jake as a case in point. Jake has been good overall, but I don't think he has improved much mechanics wise since his first year with us. A lot of that has to do with the coaching, not necessarily Fox, but the QB coaches and O coordinators we've had since we picked him up. To expect that Manning would have put up the numbers and had the success with us as he has had with Indy is not a given.
