I don't think its a slam dunk that we let go of JStew, but if we do go RB in R1 or R2, I can see DG using that $6.5M extra money to spread around elsewhere.  Dude put up one 100+ yard game this season and had less than 900 yards. He isn't "oft injured" per se, but he does miss a fair enough amount of time year to year, as well as 30 years old at seasons start.

Say we come out of the draft with Fournette/Cook/Foreman/etc. and are able to sign someone like Chandler or JPP, that $6.5M could help us also bring back Addison.

I like Stewart here and he's a tireless worker. He'd also be a great back to share the load with a rookie too. Imagine how worn out the defense would be in the 4th quarter!  Just saying that DG is a numbers/big picture guy that doesn't let emotion get in the way of his decisions for this franchise.

I hope Gettleman has learned his lesson regarding replacing very good veterans and with rookies. Sure we have other backs but none able to run or block like Stewart. Plus as mentioned already, we need 2 backs who can share the load. So far cap has been very dissapointing and Fozzy is a good change of pace guy but hardly a workhorse. We do need to draft a RB high and let him learn behind Stewart to be his ultimate replacement. What good is 50 million in cap space if we end up 6-10 again with no line and no running game. Stewart is great after first contact which is critical with a line that struggles to run block.

I got one am tired of watching rookies struggle for 8-10 games before the light pops on. If we keep our vets we might not have another slow again next year.

Really?

08-11 he only missed 2 games while splitting carries with DWill... not as the primary

Missed 7 games in 12
Missed 10 in 13
3 in 14
3 in 15
And
3 in 16

Past 5 years the guy has missed 26 full games. This does not count the games he left due to the injury.

Thats almost 1/3 of the year, on average, each year...

You saying this is common for the position?

Well, I decided to look...

http://www.profootballlogic.com/articles/nfl-injury-rate-analysis/

These stats for 2015

It agrees that RB is the most injured position, not by a landslide, but says that the average games a RB is available is 13.3 (most other positions in the 14 range)

So, I would say that stew is solidly below average in the past 5 years... closer to average over the past 2.

Over the last 3 years he has missed 7 games. Because 2 of them were at the end of last year where we were resting him for the Playoffs.

I know I am just a fan. But 7 games over the last 3 years sound dang healthy to me. It is that money that gets me. Add a couple of years, and lower that Cap hit. Then he can stay 2 more years.

I don't care about ancient history. The last 3 years, and that is plenty long for this example, he has been as healthy as any back in the league.

See 2nd analysis for an (already reached) amicable middle ground.

I now believe we need to keep both JStew (restructure maybe?) And draft Fournette/cook.

To me, it comes down to two things. One is money, and the other is how long Gman thinks Stewy will be here. If Stewy restructures, he may have two more years here. Which means we probably won't draft our RB until next year. If Stewy does not restructure? That is a totally new thread.

IMO, we will know how long Stewy is going to be here by where Gman drafts his replacement. If Gman drafts a Fournette type this year, it is probably Stewys last year. But if Gman waits until next year to get a Chub type, Stewy probably has two more years here.

Gman may think it advantageous to draft his RB in the last year of Stewy being here. Let the rook spend a year learning, and growing. So the next year when Stewy is gone. The kid is ready to go.

If that makes sense. It kinda does in my head. And if it doesn't make sense. Screw it, I'm old.

Makes sense to me but I'm old too.  The answer will come in the draft this year.  If Dave takes one high then Stew will most likely have to take a paycut to stay.
