I have been secretly working on the side since October so that I can save enough extra money by the end of 2017 to surprise my family with their dream vacation to Disney that my wife never believed we could ever afford. I've saved about $1600 of about $9000 that I need. It will take working on the side basically every day of 2017.

Update: I'm up to $3755. I'm doing well enough that now I think it might not be completely impossible to do the trip this summer, if I can somehow find a way to increase the rate that I'm earning money. 10 year anniversary is this summer and a family trip to the resort my wife has always wanted to stay at would be a fantastic gift.

Impatience has set in. I'm cutting the budget by $2500 so we can make the trip in August instead of summer 2018. I've made the deposit, so now the pressure is on to make $2000 extra dollars to pay off the balance before July 11.

That's fantastic man! Best of luck pulling it all off.

In general being more principled. I have all these beliefs about animals, personal responsibility, food, the enviroment, money etc. and I want to be more principled regarding them. So here is my list:

1. Reduce my intake of birds and mammals to practically zero.

2. Spend less money on food. Eating out less frequently and rarely purchasing alcohol at restaurants should do the trick.

3. Reduce my foot print on the enviroment.

I'm doing great at 1 and 2. Though this weekend we did go out and drop over $100 on food but that was the first time in forever.

I'm sucking at 3. I need a better plan here. My energy bill is BONKERS I think it's mostly the pool running so much and maybe my windows. Glad this thread got bumped.

Is your pool running now....like in the winter? When it is open do you run it 24/7? We cut ours off each night....it has a timer but I never use it (I should). I try to run it just enough to keep the salt readings in line.

We have a timer. We don't shut it down in the winter, it runs when it's freezing or below, which has been less this year. We actually had to up it because we started getting algae in early Feb. because it was so warm.

10 weeks to go. Still need $1366 to pay off the balance by 7/11. Still doable but a lot of work left.
