Sean McDermott to interview for Chargers HB job

It's tough to lose staff but it's part of the business. Can't blame people if they are seeking bigger roles.

On the flip side, the Chargers isn't the best organization out there, especially since there's huge question marks about the franchise's future location.

I hope there is an agreement that unless Wilks is offered a HC position he is the next DC if McD leaves.

May have been discussed privately but it wouldn't be binding.

If he ultimately thought there was a better opportunity elsewhere, we'd only be able to keep him if he's under contract, and we pretty much never get info on assistant coach contracts.

The Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows reports the 49ers have requested permission to interview Panthers DC Sean McDermott for their head-coaching vacancy.

McDermott is interviewing with the Bills on Wednesday and has also been linked to the Chargers. His interview with San Francisco is expected to take place next week. He joins Anthony Lynn, Sean McVay, Vance Joseph, Josh McDaniels, and Kyle Shanahan on the 49ers' list. McDermott turns 43 in March.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is interviewing in Buffalo today, then goes to a warmer climate to interview at San Diego. San Francisco also has expressed some interest. Assistant head coach/secondary coach Steve Wilks is interviewing for the Rams opening. Both are taking advantage of Carolina not being in the playoffs to pursue opportunities.
