Let's Talk About Mario Addison

Didnt addison have a couple suspensions?

How much do you pay for a rotational DE who is coming off a year that will make him extremely marketable?

Dude had a good year to have a good year.

He is gone but just to get that money and fade into obscurity... and he is not wrong for doing so.

Just like Rivera said, CJ is our most consistent DE. And, like I said, he allows Addison to do what he does. All you people downplaying CJ's role on the team, are just playing yourselves. He'll be back!

On a different note, we aren't paying Addison that kinda money.

"Just like Rivera said..."

The operative words.

22 sacks in his last 3 seasons as a "situational," "rotational" and "journeyman" DE.

I'll take that all day long over CJ's 13.5 sacks over the same period.

And CJ is 30 years old as well- funny how that comes up when talking about Addison but not CJ?

Emergence of Mario Addison also makes need of a DE less likely with Ealy on the opposite side we just need a VET like JPP to pair with CJ

Ealy has done nothing to say he should be a starter next season. DE is still a need.

Agree with this.  Ealy not showing up in any kind of meaningful way was one of the biggest disappointments of the year.

There were a lot of guys we were counting on to really step up this season, including:

Ealy

Boston

Delaire

Bene

and also KB & Funchess.

We didn't get too much production from most of them...  KB looked a bit better the final 2 games, but in general, all of the above were a disappointment.  Bene was coming off a bad injury from very late last season and was probably thrown back out there too soon.

Ealy certainly had no such excuse.  DE is still very high on my wish list.

Fair enough.  Fwiw, i like Addison, but I do think that Short is the better player.

I dont think anyone will argue with that.  It's about the money and value.  We didn't just draft a 1st round DE so the economical move would be to sign the cheap guy and let the guy thats getting old and wants a huge final contract walk.  Even if you tag him he will be a disgruntled grown ass crybaby so who cares.

Well in fairness if all your asked to do is come in on passing downs and go after the passer, then it's easier to rack up sacks.

Apparently he plays that role very well, spelling the starters who are grinding out every down and defending the run. Fresh legs is key and if you're only responsibility is to come in on pass rushing situations, then you have value but you're not a starting caliber DE.

I'd like to see us retain him at the right price because he plays a specific role with us and does it well. However I don't want to see us pay him starter money, when he has not proven he's ready to be an every down player.

A 30-year old Addison in a situational role versus a 30-year old CJ playing 2-3 downs per series. Who ya got?

I'm still taking Addison, make him a starter and get a few more years from him than CJ will last.

He's our DPR and will continue to be our DPR.  You don't start an Addison but I can see us giving him a decent contract.

We need a legit 3 down DE on at least one side.  CJ is in his twilight and Ealy is still a question mark.

Why do you have to pick between the 2? They are 2 best Defensive ends on the team right now.

I'd like to have them both back. However I wouldn't make either a top paid player at the position either.

Well, the Panthers made that clear when Johnson got hurt last year and all they offered him was this year at $3M. And given his performance this year, I have no reason to believe he'll be back next season unless he took an even bigger pay cut.

And given the GM's apparent reluctance to find and pay a legitimate FA, we can only assume that DeLaire, Addison, Ealy and Horton will be in the mix.

Addison, Ealy and CJ ideally should be rotational pieces on a DL.

We need starting DEs and the answer isn't on the roster.
