Derek Barnett officially declares for 2017 NFL draft

Def in my top 5 realistic players at 8. If we bypass SAF and RB, he is a logical choice. Taco Charlton and Demarcus Walker could move up into the teens if we move back, but Barnett appears to be the real deal, is very young and a good head on his shoulders.

Yes, please.

Barnett was wonderful to watch the last three years. He is mean as hell and brings it every single play.  Fantastic run defender and pass rusher.  His athletic profile probably will leave some to be desired but hes a guy who gets better in big games and would be a fantastic fit attitude wise with the defense.

Barnett reminds me of guys like Jevon Kearse and Justin Tuck.  Of all the DraftBreakdown vids, the Alabama game is the one you have to watch if you're on the fence about him as a draft selection.  He owned the top LT prospect in college, and the #1 team in the country.  He flashed all tools in that game, got a strip sack, and an INT.

I personally think Garrett + 2 QBs go in the top 6 picks.  Cleveland, Chicago, SF, & possibly the Jets (If you don't believe in Hackenburg/Petty as your future) could all desire a signal caller in the first.

I also believe Jonathan Allen and Reuben Foster go before our #8 pick, so I believe we will have an amazing list of players to choose from at 8.  At least one, if not both, of the safeties should be there (Adams or Hooker), Leonard Fournette, and Derek Barnett.

Barnett is the best DE in this draft not named Garrett.

I would be elated to have a 20-year old DE on this roster that just broke Reggie White's sack record. Clear background and high character guy that gets after the QB, is athletic enough to stunt and drop into short coverage, stop the run and FLEXIBLE.

The last characteristic is what DG, Rivera and our staff almost requires out of its players - flexibility in the system. Look at guys like KK, Butler, Shaq, Bradberry, Funch, Turner, Coleman. They aren't penciled into any one position and can offer the coaching staff versatility.

Adams is my top choice, but Barnett is right there before Fournette and Hooker.

Heck of a player that never takes a play off. He will be missed at Tennessee. Would love to see him in Carolina. I really feel confident that we will have a lot of great options at 8.

Sounds like a great player. If you are being nuetral, what would you say his weak spots are?

The guy was very productive in college, and looks like he has a lil von miller in him as a pass rusher. He hasn't reached his full potential yet and this would be the perfect place to do that with our position coaches.

You're going to have to explain the Von Miller part to me...

I've watched a ton of Barnett now over the last 48 hours and I see no Von Miller in his game and it's not even close. Miller is an elite athlete with amazing quickness off the line. Barnett is an average athlete who relies on guessing the snap count.

When Barnett guesses right, he always wins his matchup and disrupts the pocket. In the Bama game and the SC game he jumped offsides. If you watch him closely enough many times you can see him flinch a bit trying to jump the count and when he doesn't get it he's slow coming off the line.

I'm guessing NFL teams will pick up on this quickly and Barnett is really going to have to work on that first step once he enters the league.

I don't have any agenda against the guy for the record. I think he moves very smooth and fluid and doesn't give up on plays. I just wish he had a little more length to him, his body reminds me of Charles Johnson's in a way.

I want someone to try and sell me on Barnett as he very well could be the pick at 8. But don't just point to his production when selling him on me. Maybe I'm missing something when watching him play that you guys are all seeing

This goes back to the Scarlett Johansson not having quite the rear end of JLo post of the other day.  She's still Scarlett freakin Johansson!!!!  And in this case we get her at the VERY beginning of her maturity before she's white hot.

Again, Von Miller, Peppers, Clowney, Mario Williams, Lawrence Taylor, Bruce Smith, Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Bubba Smith, probably Garrett, etc. i.e. the true physical circus freak that it sounds like you want, were picked one or two overall.  Reggie White 4 overall.  And NONE of the above players dominate(d) every play of every game.  That's the nature of the DE (or OLB) position.

Your expectations are either too high or your setting yourself up for disappointment at the DE position.  Shocking for any Panther fan given our NEED at the position and the culture that would fit Barnett so perfect.

No thank you. Situational pass rusher better suited for a 3-4 OLB pass rushing spot. He gets owned in the physical game. Gives up if his first move does not work. His run defense is suspect and he likes to arm tackle a lot. Horrible in goal line situations.

He is a better version of Mario Addison with the run defense of Kony Ealy. No thanks. Vols fans keep comparing him to Reggie White. White was all around good and dominated every part of the DL on every down. I wish they would stop comparing him to White because of the record.

I would take him late first round at the earliest. Too much all around talent in the first 20 picks that can make an every down impact for the Panthers.

Technical correction, Reggie White was taken in the supplemental draft after the USFL folded, or maybe he too would have been 1 or 2 overall.  Barnett also did in 3 years what it took White 4 years to do.  Not saying Barnett is White, it's not fair given White may be the GOAT defensive player, just saying.

Hey the more top 10 potential guys declare the better our pick. If McGlinchey declares our pick will be really nice. Hopefully Tubisky declares and has a good combine. That would be the icing on the cake. The more that come out the better our pick at 40 is as well. Keep them coming.

We have 4 picks in the 1st 3 rounds. The 1st 3 at the top of the rounds. Man, if Gman can match his past successes in the draft, we are going to come out of those 1st 3 rounds with some really sweet talent.

My new mantra. We have money to spend. We have some really really good draft picks. If Gman actually spends some money in FA, and hits the draft well. How can you not be excited about what lies ahead?

That is the same mantra as the Browns and 49ers.

Or the Raiders 2 years ago. It seemed to work for them. And we are in much better shape them they were.

So having money for the first time in the Gman era does not make you excited?

Or having the 8th pick in every round, plus an extra 3rd, does not make you excited?

Dang man. Tough crowd.
