Maybe that is why g man said " evolve " wasn't the right word.  Evolve would mean Shula grows and develops. One thing G man isn't is dumb.  He knows more about Rivera and Shula's faults than we do or that he is going to let on directly in a press conference.

he didn't want to admit to his mistake,

When the team was healthy, the defense rewrote our history books for worst defensive outings.  The only legit defensive injury was Luke and we technically got better overall in that window where he was out.

Not quite true.  Bradberry & Worley were both out against Atlanta for all or most of the game (1st game) I believe.  We had Sanchez & McClain or Johnson starting at corner, I think.  I'd need to look at the gamebook to be sure.  But we were definitely missing a few defensive starters in a game or two before the bye.

I get the offense getting the microscope

i don't get the defense getting this pass.  Defense in 2016 was more disappointing than the O...

Probably because that can be directly correlated with having a green defensive backfield, complete with not one, but two rookies.

Just think, we were 21st overall in total defense, but 29th in passing and 6th in rushing. That's pretty telling.

yes, but they were not good players at that point.  Heading into that game the healthy team got just as abused as the backups.  First game against Atl....they ate Bradberry for lunch and then he went out and then they ate up Bene.  Didn't matter.   Early in the season, a healthy roster wasn't good enough.

a week 2 Worley missing a game (just an example) isn't downgraded when you go to a McClain.  All rookie CBs were pretty much giving up free yards every game early on.

DB play improved late.  Losing them late would have mattered.  Early in the season we we didn't have the bodies to compete (because the rookies weren't ready to be competitive with there reps...it was pure learning and thrown to the fire).
