Malik Hooker declares for the 2017 NFL Draft

At this rate I just want an immediate impact player. I love Shaq Thompson and I'm confident Vernon Butler will end up being a good player but with a top 10 pick I really hope to see immediate on field results. That's why I'm partial to trying to shore up our oline in free agency and drafting a skill position player with our first pick. That way we can just make the most of the rest of the draft about helping Cam because he deserves it.

Thank you, Hooker.

I still like Adams, but Hooker is 1B.  They bring different strengths and styles to the safety position like others have stated. I think him entering the draft means one of them will be available to us, and either of them would solidify our secondary.  I highly doubt two safeties go in the top 7 picks.

I really hope it comes down to Adams, Hooker, Barnett and Fournette for us at 8. I'm never for tanking, but man, what a difference a win yesterday against TB would have made.

If we needed a FS, then yes.

I do not care for how he relies on athleticism, avoids contact, and misses open field tackles.

The issue is he is better than Coleman at FS from an athletic perspective, but they are both the same type of player. Coleman is stronger at the point of attack and he appears to have better leadership qualities.

The Panthers need to move Coleman back to FS and get a SS who can make an impact physically.

The other thing to note is that Hooker does not love the game of football. His passion for the game has been talked about. He has been on the verge of walking away from the game and college until he was named a starter this season. His senior year in HS and his one year as a starter have been the only years he has stomached the game of football. Adversity is not his strong suit.

Even if he miraculously found a Luke like passion for the game of football in a couple of months, the issue remains the Panthers will have investments in Coleman and Hooker if they were to draft him. They will still need a SS.

Ed Reed had a passion for the game to the point he was like Luke in the film room. Reed is coaching and will likely eat and breath football for the rest of his life. Hooker is not even close to an Ed Reed comparison.

Hooker has burnout written all over him. Great athleticism, but not a champion mindset.

So, not saying this is true, but what do people think of the idea that because a team like us had a bad year and are drafting early, that younger prospects who know they're top talent decide to come out for the draft instead of staying at school because they think they'll have a chance to go to an overall better team.

i'm not just saying this is a panthers thing, but in general, when a team that has been very good has an off year, do you think that impacts players who are on the fence about declaring?

might be good if more of these announcements pop up.

I for one, definitely want a blue chip safety. Here are my personal reasons:

1. Ron seems to secretly covet them and has been waiting for one.

2. If McD leaves and Wilks takes over as DC, we have a secondary guru as the leader of the defense and that might shift some importance to the backend. (I know the overall strategy of D-line building is still what we're running off of, but I think a big time safety can do things that this defense has never done before and take us to a new level).

3. I just think safety is a cool position.

I can't say I'd be upset with a stud DE, but Safety is my personal choice.

This!  Hooker is a helluva playmaker and a damn good FS.  Problem is we have a solid FS who was #2 in the NFL  in ints last year.  He has had to slide to SS where he isnt the best at.  We get Hooker, Coleman is going to have to continue to play SS or Hooker is.  Hooker is similar to Coleman as in a hawking FS, but Hooker struggles hitting in the box at making key tackles.  If we didnt have Coleman and were weak across at safety id be all for it.  But we have a solid FS already and terrible at SS, and if were sitting to choose to fill that role ill take Adams.

Its like the OL problems.  If one of those elite OGs is there (future All pro)  you dont pick him and slide your probowl OG in Turner to RT just to plug.  Especially when there is a stud probowl Caliber OT sitti g there to pick aswell

Actually agree with @CPantherKing on that one.

We don't need a FS. We already have Kurt Coleman, and Hooker wouldn't be able to make the switch well. Not only that, but he's currently a one year wonder.

Would rather have a sure SS in Adams, and this extra option makes it more likely we get him. Chargers go for Hooker, we get Adams.
