GAME GRADES !

Quarterback grade: Cam Newton, 45.0

Rookie-like mistakes cost Newton and the Panthers

When your MVP QB is making rookie mistakes, it is tough to win a game. Cam Newton was staring down receivers, throwing jump balls to players like Ted Ginn – who will never make that decision a good one by going to get it – and continually targeting a corner in Tampa Bay’s Brent Grimes who clearly had his number all day, almost as if it became a matter of pride. He did get them down the field late to set up a game-winning attempt, and was unlucky his intended receiver slipped on his cut, but in all honesty, he didn’t deserve to win given his performance.

Top offensive grades:

G Trai Turner, 86.3

OT Daryl Williams, 84.2

WR Kelvin Benjamin, 81.3

OT Mike Remmers, 74.1

G Andrew Norwell, 70.8

Offensive line plays well, but bad plays and missed kicks dug a hole for Carolina

Carolina’s offensive line played well, and Newton was rarely under much pressure (seven snaps in 35 dropbacks). The issue was Newton tossing the ball to the opposition, and seemingly intent on going after Brent Grimes, who was locking down whichever player lined up near him. When Newton went after other Bucs defenders or ran the ball, the team had more success, but the positive plays from players outside of the offensive line were too few and far between to rack up points.

Top defensive grades:

LB David Mayo, 87.2

S Michael Griffin, 84.6

CB James Bradberry, 83.2

DT Kawann Short, 80.6

DT Star Lotulelei, 79.0

Big plays bottled up the Bucs — and has Carolina been using the wrong linebacker to back up Kuechly?

The Panthers’ defense were able to force a few big plays to end Bucs drives, but the play of LB David Mayo was most notable, flashing the kind of ability he showed in college and suggesting that maybe the Panthers have had the wrong linebacker starting in place of Luke Kuechly with A.J Klein. Mayo had a team-high four defensive stops despite playing just 21 snaps, and allowed only five yards in coverage, while Klein has a season grade of 44.6. James Bradberry’s pick continued a rookie season of flashing big-time potential.

Mayo was a pleasant surprise. Makes Klein going to FA most likely the case.

Michael Griffin. I'm trying to figure out if maybe FS isn't his strong suit, and SS is. I need to checkup on the Seattle game for that and see what position he was in.

You can bet I was ecstatic with Bradbery's performance - working on a write-up on that. In fact, he shut down Evans in the first half from what I'm reading so far in man-to-man.

G Trai Turner, 86.3

OT Daryl Williams, 84.2

Bradberry, 83.2

Williams IMO, has proven that that RT position is his. He and Trai just play off each other so well. I can't wait to watch these two play together for a loooong time.

Bradberry. What can you say? The 2nd rounder has defiantly shown his worth. With Worley, and Johnson, our CB position is doing good work.

If the team can figure out what the heck happened this year, and kick it to the curb. There is quite a bit of talent to work with going forward. Ah hellz, you all know I am still as giddy as ever over our future.

Only time Bucs did bring pressure was when they did overload blitz'

Daryl Williams and Trai Turner were stout over on the right side.

Ryan Kalil is the missing cog right now to prevent those blitz. Oh, and Cam's shoulder getting healthy.

OL will be decent barring any injuires we just need to address LT position after getting exposed the whole season.

2017  #1 rushing team with a 1,000 + yd  RB

Rookie RB > J- Stew > Cam

If Oher comes back? Our Oline has a chance to be really good. If we have to go with Remmers? Our Oline has a chance of being pretty good. So, IMO, our starting Oline should be in good shape. So I am not one of those "Have to use valuable resources on a LT" folks.

That said. If the chance to upgrade at LT falls in our lap? You gotta go with it. Otherwise, I am a firm believer of getting your developmental OL later in the draft.

As to anything else draft wise. I am a firm believer in drafting the best athlete on the board. Within reason of course.

Where we pick, I would usually advocate for a LT. But with the talent coming out, and who is available in FA, this is not the year to spend a top 10 pick on a LT. A DE? Second on my list of must have's. If there is an athletic DE sitting there? You best take him.

Once you decide what to do with that 1st rounder. You just draft BAA. Best Athlete Available, the rest of the way.

Sorry, once again, I got on a tangent and drifted off. Using the draft to get athletic skill position talent. Plenty of ways to get those other type players. Don't waste your draft picks on anything but athletes please.

The only DE worth the pick is Myles Garrett otherwise Cam Robinson is the OT to get.

The best pick is Leonard Fournette
