Steve Smith calls it a career. Gives a shoutout to Delhomme, Proehl, and Hankton.

Again, not saying his overall body of work was greater -- Smith is a HOF talent and White isn't. But comparing their respective peaks, White's star shone a little brighter by basically every metric.

Bruh

White's best season on 179 targets: 1389 yards and 10 TDs (with 57 yards and 1 TD added in the postseason)

89's best season on 150 targets: 1563 yards and 12 TDs (with 335 and 3 TDs in the postseason)

so at their best....89 had a clear edge statistically.  89's YAC numbers were historic that year

Peak =/= 1 season. Again, one is a HOF and one is not. However, for a good chunk of years (the bulk of which the two were in their primes and in the same division), the latter outperformed the former on average.

That is at their peak of their primes.  White got more targets and opportunity during his window...never shined brighter in actual play IMO

Postseason play must not be considered in your assement....because 89's play in that window poos on everyone not named Fitzgerald of recent times

I will give you that -- his first two games were absolutely monstrous.

89's 2003 and 2005 postseasons were simply awesome. White wasn't that type player....White was a volume guy and 89 more a one man show playmaker.

not many guys of 89's era have better individual postseason resumes and 89 only went 3 times in his prime.  Fitzgerald only guy that stands out

Karl Hankton.

But, yea I miss Smith and will miss him in his retirement. All Jake had to do was throw it up, and Smith was going to somehow come down with it. I hope he comes back to Carolina and retires, but I don't think that will happen as long as Gettleman is in charge. Both are too prideful. I still believe that whole situation with him being cut could've been handled a lot better. I was ok with releasing him, but it could have been done better.

Not just pride.  Reports/rumors are 89 went full scortched Earth on Dave as he left.  Don't think that bridge can be repaired nor would either party really care about rebuilding it
