DNewton's Ten resolutions for Panthers, including more fun for Cam Newton

10. Get healthy: We’re not talking a change in diet here as often is the case for resolutions. We’re talking about getting key players such as left tackle Michael Oher (concussion), center Ryan Kalil (shoulder), middle linebacker Luke Kuechly (concussion) and others that missed multiple games this season with injuries back to full strength. The nucleus to win is here when everyone is full strength.

10a. Stay out of the protocol: Carolina led the NFL with eight players suffering nine concussions this season. Oher missed the final 13 games. Kuechly spent three weeks in the protocol and will miss the final six games with the organization unwilling to risk further head trauma for a team going nowhere. Concussions definitely have impacted this season, so the Panthers need to figure out if there was something that led to so many.

9. Spend money wisely: This one is for general manager Dave Gettleman, who has been frugal with a tight salary cap during his first three years. But he’s projected to have at least $40 million in cap space during the offseason, so he should spend it upgrading the offensive line, finding an every-down pass-rushing end and perhaps a veteran cornerback.

8. Get organized: Success in the new year, at least defensively, is predicated on pressuring the quarterback. Finding a way to keep your sack leader from 2015 (DT Kawann Short) and 2016 (DE Mario Addison) is the best way to do that. Gettleman could use the franchise tag on Short if he desires, and Addison shouldn’t come at too big of a price unless another team offers him the opportunity to be an every-down player.
