The Case For John Ross in the 1st Round

Here me out.....

There's a lot of "ifs" and "buts", yet I do think the addition of WR John Ross out of UW is an intriguing thought.

WR is not a "need" for this team, but if there are those that think Cam needs more weapons, then here you go.  For those that wish we had a burner that can actually catch (sorry Ted Ginn, Jr.) that will stretch the field and open up the middle of the field for our tall, rangy WRs, continue reading.  

My huge "IF" is as follows.... and isn't that far fetched:

- Carolina picks in the 11-15 range.

- The big names are off the board:  Garrett, Barnett, Adams, Fournette, Cook, Robinson

- Gettleman/Rivera/Richardson go BPA vs. reaching

I personally want the names mentioned above, but having watched a lot of Husky football, I think Ross would be amazing in Carolina with a strong-armed QB like Cam.  Ross would improve ST immediately and a weapon like Tyler Lockett is in Seattle.  He's shifty and a quick-twitch sure-handed WR that can make defenses miss with ease.

How about this play against Cal.  First piece of beauty is how many steps he has on the defender. Then he comes back for the underthrown ball, and then the rest is ridiculous vision and athleticism to take it to the house.

And then there's this article on just how fast his wheels are.  Dude was out for the '15 season with a knee injury.  Comes back at the spring practice, and blazes a 4.25 40.  Child please.  His stat line for 2016:  76 rec. - 1122 yards - 17 TD.

Much the way Brandin Cooks and OBJ started climbing draft boards leading up to the draft, watch John Ross do the same.  It will be interesting to see him this weekend against a stout Alabama defense. 

Not saying it's a likely scenario per se, but much the way we drafted Shaq with Luke/TD already on the roster, and the Butler pick with Star/KK here, it's not out of the realm of possibility.  I don't want Ginn here anymore and a lackluster year from both Benji and Funchess, I wouldn't rule this out either.

I love Ross, but where we will be will be a reach to draft.

Now if we we make a big trade to move down id love him.  He reminds me of a Antonio Brown, Cooks guys, or a young Desean Jackson. Super speedy and shify but great hands

We could fall into that 10-12 range in the draft and he easily could move up to that top-15 range so I'm not sure if how much of a reach it would really be.  If he has a really good game against Alabama in the playoff and then runs a really good 40 at the combine I could see him moving up boards a lot.

Depending on who is off the board when we pick I also like the idea of trading down.  One reason that drafting 8-9 is so much more advantageous of drafting 10-14.  We could potentially pick up another 2nd rounder.

Other than his first draft we've been drafting at the bottom of every round.  We havnt really seen him trade down because I think he values those first round picks since they will have the 5th year options.  The last 3 drafts if he traded down, we'd be trading out.

 

If our top tier guys on our board at our pick are gone, and he believes the talent level between our prospects and the guys who will be there in the early 20s.  Im sure he'll hop all over for a deal

Yeah, I know Gettleman values his 5th year option, but IMO he over-values it. Now, we have no idea what kind of offers if any may have been on the table this year or last, but I think there's a really good chance we could've moved down a few spots and still nabbed Shaq and Butler while picking up an additional 3rd or 4th if the opportunity was offered. 

Is that 5th year option worth a 3rd or 4th round pick? Maybe, maybe not. To Gettleman, it is, but then again, I think Gettleman is far too conservative financially. We're awash in cap space while taking Ls left and right because we don't have a well rounded roster.

Good idea with the trade down idea. Then guys like Taco, Lawson, Howard and Ramcyzk (sp) come into play. A speedy WR is more of a luxury need, but with Ginn's uncertain future here as a UFA and Brown not being on the level of a John Ross, I would still be ok with Ross in a Panthers uni.  Brown as the #4 gives us a well balanced crew. KB-Ross-Funchess-Brown.

I'm still of the opinion that a SAF, DE, OT should be our top 3 areas of need.  Should be interesting to see the jockeying and moving up/down of players over the next few months. Definitely think Ross moves into that 10-15 range once April hits.

Love the theory but I think it's the wrong player: I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Corey Davis at number 8. 

I know we need a safety and a defensive end, but frankly I'm not sold on Adams and Hooker is more of a FS and I'm not sold on Barnett either. 

Williams reminds me of a better version of KB.

Dalvin Cook looks like he has the vision of Trent Richardson. 

My top picks right now at number 8:

1. Davis

2. Adams

3. Hooker

4. Barnett

5. Williams

6. Fournette

 

Very high chance at least three or if not all of those players will be there when we draft.

I like Corey Davis but he will probably have to run a 4.38 at the combine for him to shoot up our draft board. But I like that he was the focal point of his offense, they moved him around the whole field.
