7-9, 7-9, 8-8, 7-8-1, 7-9 or 6-10

This is the culture in Carolina and it starts with the type of coaches that Richardson hires.  You know, the ones that play not to lose instead of playing to win.  Fox and Rivera are close to the same person.   They love the field goal and are perfectly fine with it.    These coaches are middle of the road guys, that sometimes got handed great teams, and won not because of THEM but because of the team.   Then the coaches, the owner, and the GM think we can just trot back out without making changes or, even keeping the same team in tact, and do just as well.  It doesn't work.

We can hate on Atlanta all we want, about how they have won like one playoff game under Ryan, or they are inconsistant, but they are going to the playoffs, and we aren't.   We aren't after a 15-1 season where we let our top CB go for nothing without a viable plan.  We didn't do anything to improve.

We heard all offseason last year, about how "you don't win a Super Bowl in FA" over and over.   Nope, but ATL's signings have helped them move forward combined with draft picks.   We thought drafting was all we had to do.   Typical Panthers team, every year after a winning one.

Of course there are injuries, all teams, but they get through them.

The thing that sucks SO much about this horrible season is the fact that we couldn't bring that Lombardi home last year. Hold on to the ball. That's it. It Negates those touchdowns. If Gano made that FG, Denver wouldn't have been in field position to make theirs. That game was ours. That season was Carolina's, and now we are back in the same sorry rut that this organization always gets into. I do have hope for next season, but with Atlanta getting really good, and Tampa improving, it's going to be a lot harder now. We could've gone 0-16 this season and I'd still be fine had they won the super bowl.

Remind me why Gettleman was brought in?

Oh yeah, to establish consistent winning seasons.

Sustained success. This year has sucked no doubt but before this year DG had 3 straight years to the divisional round of the playoffs or further.

The NFL is year to year. There's no guarantee atlanta won't be right back to sucking next year. Ryan has been as inconsistent as the panthers in following up his good years with bad ones. We have major work to do this offseason in both personnel and player development but we can get back if gettleman does more than sit on his fat ass this year.

The participation trophy in 2014 does not count as success. They were 7-8-1 and did not have a legit shot in the playoffs. Anyone who uses the guise of a division championship to cover up a losing season like that and frame it as success has no sense of success on the NFL level.

Here are the only 2 measures of team success in the NFL. Anything less is not success and merely luck surrounding a mediocre team.

  • You can argue 9-7 is a measure of success. I believe 10 wins is the minimum based on season alone.
  • Competing for nothing less than the conference championship.

So, sustained success has not been achieved, and shielding failure with a division championship due to division wide failure is a desperate argument. One of the failing teams in the NFC South had to represent in the playoffs in 2014. The Panthers pulled the long straw.

The Panthers were the best of the worst. That does not excuse them from being one of the worst. 2014 was another failed season following a strong season due to an off season implosion of epic Gettleman-like proportions.
