I was reading an online article about dog behavior and it said if you want to think like a dog, you have to understand that a dog's world is dominated by smell. A beagle's nose has 300 million scent receptors. Our noses have six million.

Just finished reading a book called Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote. Good read about how dogs react based on smell and ingrained behavior. Also a real tearjerker as he talks about his dog Merle getting older. Highly recommend it
