Pundits "Stabbed in the back"

Josh fugged up by hiring that agent.  We don't know what was said between the agent and Gettleman, but I imagine it wasn't pretty if it made Gettleman rescind the tag.  There's a reason Josh hired another agent immediately following us cutting him.

This isn't the first time that Gettleman made a move without talking to the player involved. The same thing happened with Smith. It wasn't so much he was released but it was how it was done. Gettleman has a track record of making decisions without even having the decency to discuss it with the player first. Poor way to run a business and it further alienated players moreso than what is inevitable  due to your position as contract negotiator.

Dude had literally months to sign the tag, and no one outside of Josh, Dave, and the agent have a clue what was actually said during those conversations. Without definitive proof that Gettleman reneged on some kind of verbal agreement, this "stabbed in the back" stuff is gossip-column nonsense.

I don't disagree; it definitely could have been handled better...from both sides though.  I don't think it's all on Gettleman.  I can't think of any other cases right now, but the two that most people reference involve people who are known to be big-headed.  Again, not saying we handled it well, but these are two cuts out of many that have been made in the last few years.

yeah, players routinely take a long time to sign a tag when they want a deal to get done...

people keep digging their heels into that as a Gettlemen defense.  It simply in no way justifies yanking the tag away from an All Pro that wants to be here, is liked, and isn't an issue in the locker room or off the field.

there are plenty of arguments for NOT giving Norman a deal.  There just aren't good argument for not tagging him in 2016 or yanking the tag away.

    • Seems that Morgan and company really went heavy towards guys good against the run. In other words, targeting our biggest weakness in a league where pounding the rock is back in fashion. At least conceptually, these are sound moves. Really comes down to Evero being able to do something with all these pieces. We'll absolutely improve but by how much is up in the air. Worth noting this should help our offense by simply getting more opportunities to have the ball. Last season, we were the second worst in TOP, not good when it lacked explosive playmakers.
    • I don’t see what’s to like TBH. As someone posted about, spending in FA is easy. IOL was a problem because we ignored it in the draft, and we have solved (barring injury, depth is suspect) 2/3 of it with the 3rd highest paid RG and 9th highest paid LG. When you have the highest paid guard tandem, they better be good. Spending money on DL is obvious to do. Just like OL, that’s our weakness now. He’s done nothing special yet. Overspending is easy to do. Signing a Reddick or Luvu where your result is a great value, that’s special. Our 2024 draft has been very rough outside of Coker. Pick 8 and 57 better hit hard because signing FAs to be your core guys never works. The great team sign a FA or two to fill spots and use the bulk of their cap to extend their great draft picks.
