It's not like anyone forced Gettleman's hand on how he proceeded with Josh or the signing of Greg Hardy. It's his decision to not do contracts during the season, but instead deal with signing current players, free agents, and draft picks all during the short off-season.

I am not sure what you are trying to say here, and those situations have been discussed to death. So I am not going to go there.

Almost no GM does contracts during the year. You let your players play, and don't distract them with contract talks. That is not exclusively a Gman thing. As a GM, if you are ready, and have done your due diligence, there is plenty of time during the off-season to get your work done.

We have all heard that this is Gman's favorite time of year. Holed up in his office watching tape for the draft. Working on his FA list, and evaluating his own team. By the time the off-season starts, Gman will be ready to go to work.

If a GM waits until the off-season to get to work, he is going to be behind the eight ball big time, and probably won't be around for long. So it is a bit naïve to think that Gman is sitting in his office just waiting on the off-season to start before he gets to work. I mean c'mon man. There is just too dang much to do, in such a short period of time, to be sitting on his hands waiting for the off-season to start.

So the fact that he CHOOSES to not to make important decisions at the correct and appropriate times and waits till the last minute to choose the best course of action to go in is an legitimate excuse for him? All the best FAs are first priority, its a GMs job to take action earlier in hoping to acquiring talent to their roster.

If you are talking about the Josh scenario, I am not sure you have your own time frame calibrated correctly.

By the time Gman rescinded the tag on Josh, there were no FA worth a dang left to sign. It was not Gman's fault Josh dilly dallied around signing the tag. Blaming Gman in this instance is just not fair.

Josh could have signed early in the process. Josh could have said the wasn't going to work for him. With how Josh played this, it was almost like he knew he was putting us behind in FA. Because Josh absolutely knew he was not going to get the money he wanted from us.

That Josh money was the ONLY money we had last year. It was ear-marked for Josh. When Josh made it clear he was in no hurry to sign, Gman said to heck with this, and rescinded the tag. However, by that time there were no viable options for replacing Josh. So you got 3 CBs drafted. All because Josh did not feel the need to let us know what was going on. Whether that be the Agents fault, or Josh's. But throwing all the blame at Gman for that event is just plain wrong.

And maybe the reason he was frustrated was that Norman not negotiating in good faith kept them out of the FA market.

That is my main thought about this whole thing. Josh had to know right from the start that he was not going to get the money he wanted from us. He could have been upfront right from the get go and tell Gman "This is where I am at, I either get this or I walk." That would have given Gman time to work on the CB situation.

I have no idea what truly transpired between those two. But IMO, Josh very well could have given us a heads up that he was not going to sign for what we offered. Josh played it out exactly how someone with an axe to grind would have.

I will say that I am cognizant of the fact that this was Josh's first big contract. So he may have under estimated his role in the negotiations. Part of me sees that, but man, if that was my money? I would have been a lot more hands on than Josh appeared to be.

I don't think he had an axe to grind I think he thought he could have it both ways. He's an odd character who seems down to earth in reality but can't help living the attention. I think he lived the team and wanted to stay and also play this attention in the media part then at the end get paid the big contract and still be the local hero.

Oh, I can absolutely see that. He even said he wanted to be here. But can we truly believe him?. IMO, if he wanted to be here, he should have sat down with Dave and worked it out. Then if it doesn't work, at least you have tried.

I agree that Josh loves the limelight. But he also wanted the money. After all the dust has cleared. He got his money, and he is still in the limelight. The Skins don't have much competition limelight wise, so it is probably a good place for him. To me, he got what he wanted, and to heck with the Panthers.

I have not talked to Josh, neither have I talked with Gman. So I am going on what I have heard, and read, and made my own mind up with all the info I have been given.

Josh was the 3rd wheel here. As a Skin, he is probably close to being top dog. He is where he deserves to be.

Well, I just hope Dollar Tree Dave makes a decision on Short or whoever he decides to use the franchise tag on quickly so we don't miss out on the good FA's. Also, if the tag is going to be used, keep that maf**ka on. Don't later decide to rescind it.

I'm saying as it's stated, he chose how to proceed with both Greg and Josh. If he wanted, he could have decided to let both walk and spend the money on free agents early.

So how many general managers don't discuss contracts during the season, exactly?

When was the last time you heard about someone signing a new contact during the season?

It just isn't done. First, there is no reason to bother a player during the season. Second, you may want to wait for the season to finish, because you will have a better idea what the player is actually worth. Say a guy has 8 sacks in the first 8 games, then has zero the last 8 games. When would you rather offer the contact? Lastly, I have no idea how many GMs don't do contracts, but I would guess probably every one. Because, it just isn't done.

I hear about contracts signed often enough during the season. So can you name maybe just a few prominent general managers that don't discuss contracts during the season?

I have said it just isn't done. Or that it is rarely done. That is pretty much my list. How about you name a GM or two that actually did a contract during the year? After all, you have claimed to have heard about such deals being done.

I'm not the one making claims of how general managers do business around the league, you are. If you can't name a single manager outside of Carolina that doesn't talk contracts during the season then maybe you shouldn't make the claim. All I have to do is search reddit and I find these contracts were done this season. Actually several were done in the last week, and there's many more. Also, I'll remind you I'm not just talking signings, I'm talking negotiations.

I accept your concession. Though I wonder if you even noticed the Patriots among the teams that have signed players to extensions (that I've listed) this season, or are you just willfully ignoring them?
