I don't think he gets hate. There's been legitimate injury concerns for years and his contract is far from ideal. Other than that he's solid, but those two things are important

I don't hate stew he's a great back. I just don't know why it seems like he always spends week 3-8 with a hammie.

The injury concerns are overblown imo. He doesn't get injured any more than the average nfl running back, especially one who plays like he does.  He just plays an injury prone position, and most of his injuries came in at in a two year or so period.

The problem is cap hit and him getting to the age when running backs start to decline performance wise.

Plus lots of good RBs available in the draft.

Even so, I'm not convinced Stewart is gone next year, though I acknowledge it's possible.

Same here, I think its probably about 60/40 he will stay.  Higher than that if he is willing to restructure.

And I could see that happening.

By all accounts, Stewart is a colossal dork. He's certainly no diva and doesn't at all strike me as a "make me the highest paid at my position" type.

I want to see Stewie stay with the team, and hopefully at a reasonable price. What I really want to see is him working as the #2 RB again behind a strong but elusive back like Williams was.

Stewart is a punishing bruiser of a running back who has excellent blocking skills and good hands, but his weakness lies in durability. When he comes in after a defense has been chasing another back, he just destroys linemen and linebackers on first contact. When those guys are still trying to catch their breaths, Stewart has the ability to just pummel them near to death.

That dual running attack is something we are sadly missing and we can't really afford to use Cam as that #1 RB guy. Maybe in this year's draft...

I agree - the cap hit is $8.25.  A post June1 cut saves us $6.25m.  That's a lot of money that will be hard to ignore.

Regarding production decline, we may already be seeing this:

2014 ypc: 4.6

2015 ypc: 4.1

2016 ypc: 3.6

I love stewie - but this is a business.  Can't pay half a million dollars per game for 50-60 yds when you can get that for a lot less.  It will probably take a 'Charles Johnson' type deal to see stewart in a panthers jersey next year.

To be fair, this season's OL injuries hurt Stewart too.

The question that has to be asked though is if there is a back readily available that can produce 50-60 yards/game under the same OL/offensive conditions. Not saying there isn't, because I genuinely don't know, but stats like that don't tell the whole story.

The OL injuries definitely hurt.  Having Oher and Kalil the entire year certainly would have helped Stewart (or anyone else running the ball) probably get closer to that 4.0-4.2 ypc we need.  But it will be hard to resist drafting a fresh-legged RB in the third round which will cost 700k per year vs. paying Stewart 8.25 mil.

Do you believe Stew would take a cut and play for 2-3 mil, or do you think he'd take the money he's made so far and ride that golden exercise bike out into the sunset?

Hard to say.

Like I said, he doesn't strike me as a "pay me all the money" guy.  and he's been willing to accept a backup role before.

Well, I do think some of the decline is due to poor offensive line play, but otherwise I agree with you.
