Path to the Playoffs

Panthers have to Win Out

Atlanta have to Lose Out

Tampa have to Lose Out

Saints have to Lose to Arizona and Win against Atlanta and Tampa

This would put Atlanta, Tampa and Carolina at 8-8 with Saints at the bottom at 7-9. All three 8-8 teams would be 3-3 in Division. Carolina would be 7-5 in the conference while Atlanta and Tampa would be sitting at 6-6 giving Carolina there 4th NFCS Championship in a row ...................... #FeelsGoodMan

1 win by Atlanta or Tampa makes our playoff chances "π" ...and Atlanta plays SF next ... fug.. ignore ↑

Just for fun, here's an approximation of the odds of all this happening:

  • Panthers win at Redskins = .75
  • Panthers win vs Falcons = . 75
  • Panthers win at Buc = .75

[Just for effect, I'm letting myself be an overly optimistic homer on those Panthers game odds.]

  • Falcons lose vs 49ers = .2
  • Falcons lose vs Saints = .4
  • Bucs lose at Cowboys = .9
  • Bucs lose at Saints = .7
  • Saints lose at Cardinals = .7

Combined Probability of all 8 of these necessary events happening = .75*.75*.75*.2*.4*.9*.7*.7 = .0148

Since it's the Christmas season, let's just go ahead and round that .0148 up to a 0.15. And since it's the Hannukah season, let's go ahead and round that .015 up to a .02.

So yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's official: your 2016 Carolina Panthers have a 2% chance of making the playoffs!

They're not going to lose to the 49ers . and the bucs have been on a role lately you expect them to lose multiple games in a row?

We win one time and everyone suddenly all talking about playoffs

The Falcons did lose to the Chargers in Atlanta. 30-33

So, there is hope.

There's a particularity batshit scenario in which the entire South ends up at 8-8 and the Saints actually win the division via best record against non-divisional common opponents (5-3 to everyone else's 4-4). We'd then get the final Wild Card due to conference record provided that the Redskins, Packers, and Vikings lose out; with the exception of the latter two playing each other Week 16 (though the winner wouldn't matter).

We'll be officially eliminated before playing another down, but it's kinda fun to look at all the crazy scenarios that are still technically possible.

Then Oher, Kalil, and Lee come out of IR. KB gets hungry for football and not burgers. We go to the SB in beat Brady and the Pats. NFL takes the MVP trophy away from Carr and give it to Cam. Shula gets a HC job in Buffalo replacing Rex. Everybody wear ties to the SB parade in Uptown.

Then, I proposed to Megan S. and she says YES!

when you know you have a crappy team, you really don't want to barely sneak into the playoffs and lose immediately and blow your chance at a good draft position and being stuck with the same stuff next year. I would much prefer us lose out than win out. I have never in my life had that belief until this season. Things have to change this offseason.
