Am I the only one who thinks an 8-8 finish should cost Rivera his job?

Kyle Shanahan  might actually turn out to be a good head coach, but I'm not that thrilled with Newton in the kind of system he'd want to run.

Frank Reich and Anthony Lynn are the guys that interest me most right now.

Shanahan also seems to love throw his QB under the bus anonymously to the media when things aren't going well. Did it with RG3, his one year with the Browns and with Matt Ryan at the end of last year. Probably not the guy you want with Cam who will probably always have some bad stretches here and there.

Don't feel like reading the entire thread, so I apologize if this has already been said.  Firing a three time division champ coach because he has one bad season would make us look pretty bad.  Its highly unlikely that any established coach would want to come here after that.  So we would likely have to hire a relative unknown, or promote from within.

It's not just this year.

Rivera's issues go way back.

In our minds perhaps, but to much of the rest of the football world, not so much.  There are a number of prognosticators who think Rivera and company greatly over achieved last year, considering the lack quality backs and receivers and a average offensive line.

There are three potential head coaches I know of who have a prior connection to Dave Gettleman.

Frank Reich - they were together in Buffalo; Reich also has a connection to the Panthers as our first QB

Kyle Shanahan - connected via Shanahan's dad Mike, who was with Gettleman in Denver; arguably the hottest of the hot candidates right now

Anthony Lynn - was a player in Denver when Gettleman worked as a scout; getting a lot of attention for offensive improvement in Buffalo

Some solid choices. I'd be interested in giving Reich or Lynn opportunities

All I know.. I just want better play calling... All we ever do is... Run Run, Pass, Kick.... Run, Run, Pass, Kick.... Pass, Run, Run, Kick.... Over and over and over.

Modern NFL rules are set to advantage the rushing game, didn't you know that?

Ummmmm...

Unless Carolina wins out this season, Rivera will have had 4 losing seasons at Carolina out of 6.

One?

We were horrid when he arrived.  I don't think the average person would hold the first two season against him given he took over the absolutely worst team in the NFL.  Our fans do of course, but fans tend to be unrealistic.  And losing season or not in 2014, we still won the division, were clearly the best team in the division and set up ourselves for a great run in 2015.

Point was though that we went to the Superbowl last year when most outsiders thought we would be lucky to even get to the playoffs.  We had receivers that nobody wanted, a rb who most thought was decent, and a quarterback with a strong arm who could run, but had accuracy issues.  And an oline with only one legitimate star on it (Kalil).  And we ended up with the number one offense in the NFL.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly have some issues with the staff.  Primarily lack of focus and discipline coming into the season.  To many penalties and unforced  But Rivera ain't going anywhere, no matter what us message board aficionados think.  We can discuss it of course, because there really isn't much else to discuss right now other than draft picks and ruining the season a few teams, but it isn't happening.

I would like to agree with you here.

Except the Panthers are still losing games in Year Six under Rivera for many of the exact reasons they were losing games in Year One:  Rivera's poor in-game situational analysis.

When do we expect Ron to improve in this area?  Year Ten?  Eleven?

Thats the 2nd half play calling. First half the play calling is decent. Shame we never do it for 60 min

Not sure about him as a HC but Kyle can call some offensive plays.

Shula needs to go.  Did you know we have not score a touchdown in the second half is 8 of 13 games.

The only teams we have scored TDs in the second half are SF, Atl, N.O. TB and Oakland.  Almost all are lousy defenses.

SF we still tried to let them in the game,  Atlanta was playing prevent, N.O is still one of the worst D's in the league (BTW the second time we had 3 point on them)   Oakland you can thank the defense for giving us a chance.

Shula is terrible.  He his clueless. Football is more like chess while Shula is playing checkers.
