4.75 Mil in cap space says no.

We'll draft Fournette or Freeman and net $1 Mil at least from letting him go.

I don't want to see it happen, but I am about 95% sure it is going to happen.

Wouldn't surprise me either, and like you said we really don't save a ton of money if we replace him with a first round pick.  Also I'm not sure how much of a difference either of those players would make in the short term with the roster we have at the moment.

What would help this offense more?  Draft Fournette or Draft Cam Robinson and keep Stewart?

What would help this team more?  Draft Fournette or Draft a DE or a TE or one of the Safeties and keep Stewart?

I personally think Fournette might turn out to be one of the best backs in the league but I'm not convinced that is a luxury we can afford with some of the other holes we have on the roster, especially since we do have Stewart under contract for another year.

If we can address some of these needs through free agency we might be in a better position to truly go BPA and at that point Fournette could easily be the pick.

The problem I see with keeping him is...lately you can almost count that he will miss a minimum of 3-4 games a year...and when he is out, our offense suffers.  If we can find a new OC that can account for his absence and adjust our offense to play without him when he isn't fresh, I say keep him.  If we keep Shula, best to change up to a fresher back that we can hopefully count on being in every game.

If we can really improve our O-Line in the off season, he could be Elite in the run game, he is as physical as a Peterson or Lynch...and with him 'running through peoples faces' the defenses get worn down quick.

My problem with Jonathan Stewart is the inability to finish a season healthy. He's alway nursing something. First it was his toes. Then his Hammies. Then his Ankles. He's never healthy. Which is a shame. The recurring theme for him when people post about him is that "When healthy.." Almost everyone starts out the sentence with that. When healthy...well yeah, he's just never healthy. I grew tired of that even when Williams was still here. So moving forward, if we take a RB in this draft. I'd like to see the Rookie start and have Stewart Finish. Stewart always produces when he's on the field unfortunately he takes a beating that his body can't handle. So lighten the load for him. Pick up a 3 down back and let him come in and finish defenses off. This will work wonders on his health issues and at the same time give us that one two punch we miss AND not have to run Cam as much, keeping him on his feet and healthy as well. CAP and Fozzy are different types, change of pace backs. We need a bulldozer back.

Fwiw, he is similar in that regard to most NFL running backs that are his age. He has actually played in a higher percentage of possible games than Marshawn Lynch did.  Stewart just plays a position that gets a lot of injuries.  His age and cap hit are why we will probably let him go, unless he restructures.

Actually from 2010 to 2014 Marshawn Lynch missed jut one game:

JStew on the other hand missed 22 games during the same period:

Some of you are going to be very disappointed.

Stewart is pretty much gone. He's been beat up physically, has no line to run behind, and we get almost $5 Million to cut him.

$5 Million dollars would get us the best back in the draft and leave us with money left over to put towards extending guys like Short and Turner, if we so choose, or building a better line for our new RB and Cam to perform behind.

I love Stewie as much as anyone the Panthers have, but I just really see Gettleman looking at the bigger picture.

We have enough CAP space, if anything Tolbert is getting cut and J-Stew is taking his place.

Also Gettleman is not looking at a bigger picture he can hardly see over his FUPA.

What makes you think that this is the offseason where Gettleman finally decides to spend all this cash he's been saving for 4 years?

He should be here for at least one more season.

Our absolute top priority in 2017 should be OL, and protecting our MVP. What's any QB's best ally besides a competent OL? Yep, a quality running game. Keep Stewart another year, and start looking for his successor. But again, if you can't protect your quarterback, it doesn't matter if you have the best RB in the league. It's gonna be a long day at the office.
