What is obvious is that everyone jumps on the offense yet ignore the real elephant in the room which is Gettleman knew the defense would struggle and hoped the offense would keep them in games until the defense solidified. Problem was not giving the offense the line it needed to develop a run heavy scheme. And if I knew it last March surely he did as well.  Some coaches may serve as sacrificial lambs but Gettleman screwed this up when he didn't get vets to start and let rookies struggle as they always do.

In many ways didn't this team make the same assumption after the Jake meltdown vs Arizona?  The front office thought they were close and stayed status quo and got burned.

Same happened this offseason. Getty thought all i need to do is get rid of Norman's contract and with our front 7 surely we csn get by with a young secondary. 

Similarly with the offense.  They over thought the team chemistry thing and also thought status quo would be enough.

I know everyone brings up the Norman thing and while it did hurt I think the biggest mistake Gettles made was thinking Kony Ealy from the Superbowl was going to be the Kony Ealy we'd see all year long. He didn't do anything to find a consistent de opposite CJ because he assumed he had a great one(and Ealy was beyond great in the Superbowl). That decision has backfired in a huge way and the entire defense is suffering because of it. But honestly I don't know if I can blame him for it. Ealy looked like he had finally figured the game out, it was perfectly reasonable to assume he would have a good year but it just never materialized.

Another thing I see brought up a lot is OL depth and that statement is a bit misleading, our interior O-line play and depth coming into the year was top 5 in the league. RT also had ok depth with Williams, the place we really screwed up was left tackle. And that one is completely on Gettleman, he legit fuged that up.

And its almost like what people said in the off season about the offense needing wholesale roster turnover is completely true.

I think we could use an upgrade in the RB department and solidify the tackle position but IMO the problem is Captain Vanilla Mike Shula.

I keep hearing a lot of remarks stating that Shula wanted to make some changes because he said we had been figured out on offense. Anyone know if this is true? I heard he wanted a TE but we ignored that in the draft.

I believe we need a bit of fox mentality a hard nose down hill running game a tough as nails fullback a few good shots from monster fbs and rbs on von miller and the likes might intern help whoever our oline is next year

What we really need is an oc and head coach who have a philosophy that meshes with the way football is being played now and not from the 70s/80s or in high school.

It's the talent surrounding cam, we haven't really built to Cam's strength, intermediate to deep passes, our wr's aren't fast and can't create separation. Funchess and KB should both be redzone nightmares but they don't scare anyone otherwise. Run blocking is trash, and Ot are trash. Upgrades are needed throughout the offense and have been for sometime, why in the world did we get two of the same possession type receivers I'll never know.

but I'd pump the brakes on the OC search until some serious upgrades are made on offense. Right now defense and our conservative coach are bigger issues

So you're pinning it on the scheme and the organization then. He will have a hard time winning a super bowl with this coaching staff but with the right coaching scheme around him he can win one anywhere. Its not his fault that Shula calls mostly long developing plays with the weak o-line that he has. Like I said earlier Cam puts the team on his back more than any other player in the league.

We all misjudge. DG did. Now is the first year, with money and a top pick. This is the year all have been eyeing. 2017 is the make or break year.

I will say this once more, although I've said it several times over the years...

The historically successful NFL teams, those who win on a consistent basis., the Pittsburgh Steelers, Patriots, Giants, etc. all have one thing in common. Although they may have a down year now and again, there is one constant each of them rely upon for success- the offensive line.

Even the Panthers in those seasons when they've enjoyed some measure of success was when there was an O-line who had played together for more than one season. Sure, there may be one or possibly 2 personnel or position changes, but not enough the disrupt the chemistry needed along that line.

You cannot make wholesale changes on the O-line from one season to the next, or even worse, from one week to the next and expect anything good to come from it.

It all starts with the O-line. You pay for those guys to stay once you've found the right ones and after a season together, you'd be surprised what happens next.
