LOL..

CBS reported just prior to game time that Wes Welker, the Patriots’ No. 1 receiver, will not be in the starting lineup.

The reason? Patriots coach Bill Belichick benched Welker for making jokes this week about the involvement of Jets coach Rex Ryan and Ryan’s wife in foot fetish videos.

Belichick told all his players not to say anything that would serve as bulletin board material, and he was apparently serious. So Welker won’t start.

UPDATE: Welker took the field for a punt return, then went to the sideline and stayed there throughout the Patriots’ first offensive possession. He was back on the field for the Patriots’ second possession.

the obvious corollary would be belichick benching tom brady for making foot jokes... which would never happen in a billion years, because belichick is a smarter football coach than that

I would think if we go 4-12 firing Rivera is certainly on the table.  However, I think a change at OC is what we will see.

A change at OC is what we should see today. I feel a firing or player cut coming this week but knowing Rivera he'll probably throw a player under the bus. I've never once advocated losing, and fug a high draft pick, but if going 4-12 would get Ron fired I'm all in.

This!! I don't think Ron will fire anyone because I'm sure in his mind, it's the players not them.

I agree with most, it does seem really trivial and I don't see sitting Cam for the first series.

However just looking from a different perspective...

Ron has always been a coach that encouraged the players to be themselves. Cutting up , listening to music and having fun is something Ron not only supported but defended on numerous occasions.

Given that history, wouldn't one have to assume that this "incident" isn't as cut and dry as many would think? Ron has had no history of trying to change players into emotionless robots.

Since we are only speculating, I would imagine this rule was clearly stated and expectations were known. I'm sure it was a difficult decision to make.

Would I have sit him ? Probably not but then again, maybe so, in certain circumstances.

With everything else crumbling around him.  This is what Ron chooses to make a stand on ? Shows where he has his priorities. (Offense sucks turn the cheek, defense can't stop a jv team turn the other cheek) Cam doesn't wear a tie , I'll show his azz he don't run this team

This is the move of a coach who is in over his head. And he don't know how to fix the problems so he works on a perceived problem he knows he can.

To me, this is the kind of thing you do in the middle of a season like last year.

Sending a message to your quarterback that he's not above the rules is something you can get away with when you're winning.

In the middle of a losing season when you're a hair's breadth from being out of the playoffs and you're scratching and clawing for every last point you can get? Just not the time.

I have never seen Cam or any Carolina Panther wear non team colored shoes.  I believe Ginn and a few LB's had red shoes too

You realize that yesterday, in every game, that players were wearing cleats to support charities, right? The NFL had a "My Cleats, My Cause" campaign to raise money and awareness for charity.

The more you know.

Good points and from a fans perspective, I completely agree.

However, from a coaching and team culture perspective, one could only assume it was important enough to make a point.

Ron has always been a players coach as everyone knows. Does it make more sense that he just suddenly changed his philosophy or that is was an important enough issue to make a point?

Just giving a different perspective here.
