Leadership, ron rivera, and the variable rigidity of discipline

Like "I would have taken that shot too"?

I agree Rivera is back next year because he and Gettleman have always had a good working relationship and I've yet to see Gettleman fire anyone who directly reported to him anyway (even when he should have).

If I'm looking at the consequences, I just have a hard time buying that there'd be some major revolt in the locker room if Newton went unpunished for not wearing a tie.

I don't buy that the Panthers locker room is that petty, and if it were, we'd have larger issues.

But even if I did believe that would cause a ruckus, I have a hard time believing it'd be a bigger mess than the result of that first play.

Ryan Clark said it best when he described Mike Tomlin's take on stuff like this "I will treat everyone fair, bit I won't treat everyone equal" the fact that Ron can't understand/implement that just shows how out of touch he is with reality.

Nice rant but Ron will be the HC next year. Only thing we can realistically hope for is an adjustment in the coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball.

yeah, i know. he's gone as far as the current locker room stands, though. this is the most cancerous this team has felt since 2010 when jimmy clausen deliberately flung a football at steve smith's feet on a bubble screen to send him a message

Jimmy Johnson always said he had no problem giving someone like Troy Aikman a pass on something he'd harshly discipline a third string safety for.

Is that the right approach or is "fairness to everybody" better?

That's probably a debate all its own.

I forgot the cause of this, can someone refresh me? And make sure to quote me so I don't forget to come back and look.

Also, completely agree Philly. Ron is a lame duck and I'm remembering shades of Fox with us getting embarrassed on NBC like this especially with the first play decision.

I know teams shouldn't be wrapped up in headlines and all, but what made it that much worse for me as a fan was seeing ol' Dick Sherman on Gameday Live after the game saying, "a lot of our fans weren't happy with some of the things Cam did last year, so I know a lot of them are happy with what happened tonight."

fug you Sherm.

If I was there I'd just say I'm sure they weren't happy about what happened to your boy Earl who's a complete pussy, gets 1 injury in his career and cries to retirement. Dick move? yeah. Necessary response to those pricks? Yeah.

Greg Hardy was rude toward Mike Smith and the Falcons.

As I recall, this was the rematch game after Matt Ryan's "get the f--k off our field", and I think Hardy was returning the favor.

Ron is basically John Fox 2.0. He'll win the next 3 out of four games and we'll call it forward momentum and then he gets another year to hope we don't step on our dicks this time. Just like Fox used to do when we had a down year.

As much as I'd like to agree, I never thought we'd hire another coach after Fox that would make Fox look like Belichick when it comes to strategy and game management.  Rivera isn't an upgraded version of Fox.  He's a lesser version with a more talented group of core players.

One thing I really wanted after Fox was someone who wouldn't rigidly stick to the whole "left corner / right corner" thing.

I was very disappointed when I learned that Ron adheres to that strategy too.

As much as I'd like to poo on Rivera, three straight playoff appearances and three straight division titles can't be taken away from him. Ron took this team to the playoffs three times in 5 years, it took John Fox 7.

That being said, Ron has shortcomings that will never change. So it's about whether you're okay with the inconsistency or not. But Fox was our most successful coach before Ron and we let him go, so my guess would be no.

Ron's problem is he feels safe. 2014 Ron's Panthers would beat the dog sht out of this squad.

Dave and Ron think they are so god damn smart now because they rode the backs of Cam and Luke Keuchly and JNo to the Superbowl. And they all the sudden think they are the best in the business. No bro. Your players are the best. Not you.
