I'm not looking at stats alone. Try to find him on a football field this year.  Remember all those gifs Jeremy posted of him being owned by single one on one blocks? He hasn't been an impact player this season. 

He was a top 5 DT last season.  He wasn't a top 5 DT in his first two seasons, but he wasn't a full-time starter in those seasons either.  On the heels of what we all thought and hoped would be his breakout season, he honestly looks like a JAG.

You guys are putting way to much emphasis on individual sack numbers.  Defensive tackles should not be judged on that.  We are among the best in the league in run defense and as a team, we get to the quarterback a lot.  Our DT's are a big part of that.  I would like to keep them all together, if we can afford it.

I honestly think paying KK top 5 DT money would be a huge mistake.

I wouldn't be completely opposed to a franchise tag given the amount of cap space we're going to have to work with, but I just don't think KK has done enough or been consistent enough to warrant tying up huge guaranteed money into. Contrary to popular talking points on here, KK isn't facing tons of double teams.  He's largely being worked by one on one blocks while whoever is playing NT is taking the double team, be that Star or even Kyle Love.

No, not really.  Hurries are at least as important as sacks.  Guys who are consistently hurrying the QB are impacting the QB and those hurries generally translate to good sack numbers too.  Short simply hasn't been a high impact player outside of last season. I'm also watching the games and honestly, unless you're specifically looking for him, you usually can't find Short. He's somewhere in the mix just JAGing. When you compare him to a guy like Fletcher Cox it becomes glaringly apparent. Even though Cox had a career season last year too, he's been consistently much more impactful on the field than Short.

Fwiw, I thought Short got to much credit last year, to much criticism this year.  The defensive line as a whole has done a pretty good job controlling the line of scrimmage, with a couple of notable exceptions.  

 

So many things go into sacks, hurries, etc..  The quarterbacks you are going up against, the quality of the offensive line you are facing, etc..  And lets face it, early in the year, the secondary was so bad that if the quarterback had 2 seconds, that was enough.  As secondary play has improved, sack and hurry numbers have gone up.  The two have to work on concert imo.

That's awful for a penetrating three technique DT. That's less than one per game. When you add in the sacks, he's basically directly impacting one passing play per game. 

And people really want to throw top 5 DT money at him? If we do, we're probably going to get really poor ROI. Don't be mad at KK if it happens. We should know what we're paying for. The evidence is there. You don't pay a guy top 5 money to control the line of scrimmage. That's Star's job and he does it very well. KK's job is to take advantage of Star eating up those blockers and he just hasn't gotten it done this year.
