Is Kony Ealy a bust?

He was according to our GM

He's called all of our second round picks first round prospects.  I'm skeptical if he actually believes that (the only one I would agree with was Kawann Short - criminally underrated at Purdue, got knocked down a peg because people questioned his conditioning/effort) but regardless, I don't agree with him.  Ealy has a solid skill-set, but nothing special and he doesn't possess great bend.  I didn't view him as a first round prospect personally.

I'm tired of undersized DEs, this reminds me of Everette Brown.

We need one of those monsters that they keep making in labs somewhere that are 6 foot 5 and 280.

I agree with you on all those points. I never loved Ealy as a prospect either. No bend and really lacks explosion.

Just saying Gettleman was quite adamant about him being a 1st rounder on his board. He has said it about Short and Ealy, I'm not 100% on Funchess but he did say he was very highly rated. I don't actually think he said it about Bradberry who looks to be one of his biggest steals in all his drafts.

It is always a plus to have one of those guys on the team. We need a young, motivated Julius Peppers again. Man, those were some incredible days.

But I'd take a JJ Watt, too.

Ealy has developed nicely in the "non-sexy" area of run defense.

The issue, however, is that you don't draft a 4-3 run stopping end in the 2nd. A 2nd needs to be a guy that will be well rounded, or at least a pass rusher.

As a Mizzou fan, I love me some Ealy, but I am disappointed in his progress as a rusher. He still seems to get stonewalled too often, and after a few years with NFL weight trainers, I would have expected him to have gained strength.

On the other end, it still could be a technique issue, since he seems to hold his ground against the run.

As others have said, you see him flash potential for greatness (batted interceptions, taking down Wilson one on one, etc.) so although he is a JAG right now, he is a JAG with potential still.

I agree his development has been slower, but it didn't help with the secondary issues that stunted the whole defense, omething DG forgot to account for during FA.

Not sure I'm ready to label him a complete bust, but he's not what he ought to be at this point. Surprising given how much he looked to progress last season.

The word of attitude issues is also kind of a surprise given the story we saw pre-draft about him and his sister.  Gave a much different impression than what we've heard since.

He can love and support his sister and still be a punk ass
