Is Kony Ealy a bust?

For a second round pick he is a bust because his run defense is so poor. Good DEs sometimes struggle with pass rush but not run D.

Dude you obviously don't know what your talking about. He was a 5th round pick out of a small school. He was playing the run much better than pass rushing his whole time here. Same goes for CJ as well. Peppers is about the only DE I have seen really pro bowl complete right out of college.

His logic of reasoning is sort of like analyzing one bad play out of dozens, and trying to draw conclusions that mean nothing. Sort of like Luke Kuechly missing a tackle, or Cam Newton missing his third read behind a bunch of turnstiles. Nah mean?

At this point, he pretty much is a BUST. He's done nothing so far this year at all!

You take away his spectacular SUPERBOWL performance and you're wondering why he is even still on a NFL team. 

I love the man when he was in college. I loved the pick but he's done nothing. 

Back when CJ and Greg Hardy were JAG behind Peppers and the rest, they came in and showed the could get after the QB. Once they went full time as starter, the showed the deserved it. Ealy, on the other hand got the damn starting job by doing nothing and can't keep it. Wes Horton a guy cut multiple times have to come in and take over. 

 

You still find a way to keep him bc he's such a high pick and kind of based his potential off the SB. Also, bc it shouldn't cost much to keep him.

Star has been having a decent year. I could be wrong, but I'd say that all things considered, he is having a better year than last year. I've certainly heard his name more as far as pressuring the. As for anchoring the line, I can't see being without him. 

Short is good, but just not as good as he thinks he is. A DT that can produce push is likely going to get paid regardless though. I'm just haven't seen anything I'd want to upset my budget for this year.

Ealy is a glorified Delaire. There is just little consistency to his game. He scares no one, and never really has.  His play does not rate a first round grade that G-man gave him, nor the second round draft value. Even at this point  he just looks lost out there at times. Even mediocre tackles and guards handle him with ease, so yeah he is a bust. I have seen enough of him to know that he doesn't fulfill the job that we want and need him to do (and I usually like to give people the benefit of doubt until the bitter end).

Really can't argue with you here. CJ has been worth what we've paid, and when evaluating talent, that is the bottom line (although you've got to love when you get great results for a bargain). Star is the one guy on that line that we HAVE to keep no matter what. He's a cornerstone player that would be nearly impossible to replace.

Short was phenomenal last year, but the secret is out and he's performing at a level that warrants keeping him, and as a starter, but not breaking any banks for. Maybe any contract should have plenty of incentives to reward him for having another breakout year. 

Right now, I'd start Addison over Kony just as we are, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm not as comfortable comparing him with Delaire. I think Kony has a bigger upside, we just haven't seen it yet. It may be one of those "has to get over this wall" things. I could see him being a good guy like Al Wallace was back in the day. Al could come in and give a rest to a guy and hold the line with the best of them. Not a big pass rusher, but he could keep the other team honest for a while. We need that.

We do, however, need a star-quality pass rusher and I am really thinking that might even be a bigger priority for the draft than offensive tackle.

As much as we would love for every second round pick to turn into an all-star, sometimes you have to accept that a lot 2nd round picks turn into nothing more than valuable depth.  I think Ealy is that.  IMO he isn't an every down defensive end and shouldn't be penciled in as the starter but he's capable of making plays off the bench, whether it be off the edge or if we slide him into the interior.  

So, a bust?  Eh.  Not the best option in the 2nd round by any means.  We could have done better.  But when I think of a bust, I think of Dwayne Jarrett, who was completely useless.  With Ealy, I wouldn't say that.  I'd call him a disappointment more than anything, not that I expected much out of him (wasn't a huge fan of his coming out of college).  He was very good last season when he was mostly coming in out of rotation.

Besides, its just his 3rd season and it wasn't like he was a 1st round prospect or anything.  I'm not saying he's going to ever be an All-Pro kind of guy, but it wouldn't surprise me if he still ended up getting much better.  The talent is there.  He just needs to find consistency.  Reminds me of Everson Griffen, who had a slow/underwhelming first 3 years and is now one of the best 4-3 DEs in the NFL.

hardy?  he was a 6th round pick out of an SEC school.  he didn't play at grand valley state or something.  sports illustrated had even projected him as the top overall pick in the 2010 draft in one of their mocks prior to his 2009 season:

he was a nationally known prospect whose senior season and combine was a flop, that's why his draft stock plummeted.
