Nail in Coffin - Ryan Kalil and Gradkowski to IR

Welp, won't be able to have a shot at back to back winning seasons until 2019. 24 years of inconsistent, and at times, pathetic football. Couldn't do it under any of our previous GMs, and it looks like it'll be atleast 5 years before we do it under our current GM. This sucks. I'd probably consider letting go some of the coordinators, but I doubt Rivera is even being considered to be fired. Both he and Gettleman should be on the hot seat next year. This is ridiculous.

I really hope we go all in on the offensive side next season, because 20+ years of trying to be a defensive juggernaut ain't working. The sh*t ain't working, and it doesn't matter who we have in the front office.

I may be wrong, but I think with no post-season, we will come back healthy and hungry next year.

Agree with all you wrote.  Do think Kalil was playing injured all season.

I think our long season last year did take a toll.  Obviously the goal is the playoffs every year.  But I think the grueling year last year (albeit wonderful until the SB loss), then the crushing loss to Denver in week 1, and it was just too much.  The fact that we've never had back to back winning seasons seems to indicate that this team plays better when doubted and hungry rather than when praised and content.

No matter how hard Ron tried to preach against it, complacency bit hard, as did just too much wear and tear.

At least next year we will NOT be complacent.  Once again, we have something to prove.  We have NOT arrived.

Times change.  You get injured, figured out, you have to adapt.  After the superbowl performance its was obvious our line wasn't going to cut it.  What Cam did last year was awesome i just don't think we have the personnel for that system to be consistent.  Denver showed the world if you stop the run we have no chance

I agree with most of that for sure, especially about the personnel, but do we want to really change the system?

In my opinion, the system does fine, actually excels when we have the right people out there that are healthy. We need to make some changes for sure on personnel and get healthy. My point is we are a couple/2-3 roster moves away from potentially being dominate again.

No way. He's only 31 and it's a shoulder injury not a leg. Hopefully it isn't a rotator cuff though. Actually...that's what it kind of sounds like when they said he can't raise his arm.

Gross retired at 33 and was in good enough health/age to keep playing.  Not really a big difference.

IMO we do.  Tackles don't grow on trees and we have many holes to fill (DE, RB, TE, S, C).  Stew is getting older and I don't see this system as being consistent.  I think its great against some teams but we need a base offense that is quick throws and can beat these playoff type defenses without running down their throat.

For all the poo that is talked about Belichick and Carroll, those guys have legitimate football minds for all phases of the game. They don't need a staff of great coaches and coordinators to compete. I'm not saying McDermott and Shula are outstanding football minds but they are covering up for Rivera. Let's face it those two are puppets to what Ron wants to do. Ugh, I'm just so done with them.

all depends on perspective.

Ron looks better than Belichick and Carroll did at their first NFL HC jobs

I don't think Gettleman is a "give everyone a pass" kind of GM.  Yes, injuries have been a big part of the story this year, but anyone who's honest knows it's nowhere near the whole story.  I hope that Gettleman doesn't shy away from hard facts.  He's been willing to make brutal cuts before (Smitty) for the good of the team.  Let's hope he'll be similarly bold & ruthless, even if it means acknowledging some of his own mistakes.

carroll is one of the top football minds in the league and is always changing and adapting his scheme to the personnel he has.  it isn't foolproof as last week against the bucs showed but you can still field a consistent winner.  the problem with our system is that it makes masking weaknesses really difficult.  the seahawks are nearly the exact opposite; they're still a west coast offense philosophically and there's a lot that an be done in that system to keep the pass rush off the quarterback.  cam, for all his gifts, isn't an ideal fit for that system.  stack shula on top of that and you've got this year's pile of crap.

the NFL is all about juggling roster weaknesses from year to year, and every team has to do it which is where schematic soundness comes in.  it's not a coincidence that the franchises who are in the playoffs every year are coached by guys like belichick and carroll even if they have objectively sub-par talent in certain areas.

The Seahawks also were willing to keep their all pro CB and are very active in free agency and the trade market. We are the exact opposite.

Brutal, tough cuts when it comes to players?  Yes.

I'm still waiting to see someone in the front office or the coaching staff be let go for performance reasons.

Gettleman didn't want to be the "clean house and bring in his own people" guy but there are definitely some upgrades to be made in certain spots.

Sadly, I'm not yet convinced he's willing to do that.

Then he should be great on his next one.

Belichick wasn't the problem in Cleveland and he didn't magically become a good coach when he left.

Carroll wasn't the problem in NY and didn't learn how to coach when he left.

Rivera isn't one of the bigger problems here.   Give Ron a solid cast on D and he will give you a top 5 D.  Simple as that.  Give him enough talent on O to do what he wants and "logical Ron" would consistently win.   He would never be a GOAT mind but you don't need and HCs who aren't have managed multiple rings.  It is just about getting there.

Talent rules in the NFL.  Some teams acquire it the right way and some don't.

    • If you had stopped at 5-6 years I would be with you but come on, Cam was the culture. For a few years there it felt like we had the Lebron of the NFL.
