He's not what he will be at this point. Neither was Short, nor Kalil, nor any other rookie. Plus we have two DTs with contracts coming up.

It's common football sense not to judge rookies too soon.

While it's common sense not to judge rookies too soon, it's also fair to expect your 1st round pick to atleast be active on game days, and if they're not then of course there will be concerns and questions.

Rivera said in his presser that he was deactivated because his ankle isn't fully healed.

It wasn't performance related.

Probably because we had an injured backup center starting and the coaching staff wanted to make sure we had enough O-linemen if poo hit the fan. And yes, poo did certainly hit the fan.

This and what Ron said about his ankle. I guess it's just a pipe dream to expect people to think a little bit here.

The draft felt weird when it happened, the short period after, and still does.

It doesn't require any validation of the pick we made, Butler could be great, but the whole BPA direction we seem to take was reversed after the pick.  We heard it was pretty much going to be Vernon or the Henrys in the build up.   DG even admitted in the post-draft presser about us getting antsy for certain needs and trading up.

I think every GM aims a healthy balance of need v. BPA at each pick (and the weight for each should vary each round) and this draft just didn't add up from a strategic consistency standpoint.

There was a little period between our last big moves and game 1 where everyone was convinced the rest of the team's talent was good enough to mask our issues (coaching, outside linemen talent, secondary)...and then reality hit.

As a certain someone would say, "It is what it is"

RR admits Vernon Butler isn’t going to be the guy they hoped “until we stop playing.” Needs to get that ankle healthy.

This time of year everyone has health issues and isn't playing at 100%

I'm sure Butler isn't 100%.  Lot of guys get it done this time of year at less than 100%.

to me, it is Ron protecting a rookie.  Butler shouldn't be counted on to be doing much regardless of health.  He is a backup rookie at 100%
