I think it's because Rivera is terrible at talent evaluation. He rather start love than a rookie.

He was inactive because Rivera can not trust him to maintain his responsibility. He would have been a huge obstacle for Klein. Luke had enough trouble trusting, positioning and trying to get around Butler.

Gano is over paid. There is no reason a mediocre kicker should be eating up as much of the salary cap as Gano is with his ridiculous contract.

I want to believe in Rivera, especially after last year, but my god he has been making some moronic decisions this year. 

CAP is inactive because he can not be trusted to block or execute the run option consistently. Not to mention he has trouble at the point of contact - goes down easily.

The Panthers needed a 3rd consistent receiving option on 3rd down outside of Olsen and KB to open it up for Cam. The Panthers got by with Cotchery in that role. Now, Dickson, Brown, Funchess, and Ginn have all been very inconsistent with their hands, route running, and defensive awareness in that role. Hunter Henry would have easily solved that issue, and he would have brought more value to the team than Vernon Butler.

I doubt it was a shot. I know Gettleman lobbies for more time for his picks/players, but Rivera eventually has to put the ineffective players on the bench like Kony, Butler, Soliai, Klein, and CAP. Rivera would have likely had Bradberry and Worley coming off the bench if Gettleman gave him some reliable veterans. McClain and Leonard Johnson are not reliable. I have no doubt Rivera has made his requests, but they have gone unanswered by the front office this year.

Rivera will play any player he can trust to consistently take care of their responsibility. Luke, Star, KB, Cam, Norwell and Trai are all examples of Rivera trusting a game to young players. Henry would have easily gotten playing time on 3rd down and in 2 TE sets rather than relying on a struggling Funchess, Brown, and Ginn.

Kyle Love is a far superior player at this point. The best players got jerseys. That's all there is to it.

Kyle Love > Vernon Butler. There is no question. I do believe people are very reluctant to look at the lack of value Gettleman's moves have given this team with clear opportunities to add value that he easily missed in the past 4 off seasons.

If they can detach themselves to step back and look at the team, they will see there is championship talent on the team, but not enough, and Gettleman has surrounded them with project players that are anchors to the Panthers success. The Panthers are essentially a farm team for the rest of the NFL under Gettleman. That is what Gettleman loves to do and we all knew it going into 2013.

I believe some people just wanted to hope he could turn into a full fledged GM and not just a personnel director acting as a GM. That hope has been dispelled, but some still vehemently hold onto it. I believe they may hold on to this for a decade before they have to let go in favor of a younger GM that can develop the team and utilize the CBA culture and modern tech.

I hope Gettleman surprises me this coming off season, but I expect more of the same from him in 2017.

I think Ron cares more about playing the guy who knows what to do vs. someone with more talent and not the game above his shoulders.

Give Ron Rivera good overall talent and he sleep walks to a top 10 defense.   Is what it is.   If your D sucks, you just need better players if Ron your coach IMO.

Now Ron has no idea about how to call a game as a HC, flow, time management etc.  But Ron Rivera is a dang good defensive mind and coach.

Not that I disagree but if your 1st round DT is not ready to sub in at week 10 it's a coaching problem. Same with player regression.
