Is it even possible for Dave to fire Rivera?

I can see Coughlin as a consultant, but not a head coach.

If Gettleman were to hire his own head coach, my money would be on Frank Reich.

Kyle Shanahan would also be a possibility, but one I wouldn't be too happy about.

Well Tom is looking for a HC gig per Tom....

firing Rivera would make me very nervous with Tom out there.  To me, Tom would be his guy pending JR doesn't veto it

When Dave was hired it was on the terms he had to keep Rivera and all his staff. With that said does he even have the power to fire him or just try to overcome his many faults.

Is this really true?  I could have swore it was Gettleman's decision the entire time.

Yes it's why we didn't interview many GMs. JR liked Rivera and was not going to fire him or his staff. Dave has yet to fire anyone.

If he can cut Steve Smith, he can fire Ron Rivera.

But I'm not sure he will.

I don't think he should. But I do think he should force Rivera's hand on firing Shula. Defense has been solid this year if not for injuries and the young players who will get better. Adding more pass rush talent will help as well which I'm sure is somewhat high up on DG's list of priorities after the season. I've decided that the biggest problem on this offense is by far how the offense is built. It's built to be sustained solely by Cam Newton. Which is completely unfathomable for any offense. Shula is horrible in play design, play calling, adjusting and overall philosophy. We need to bring in a real OC who can build a run game that sustains itself without Cam and opens things up for the pass game and Cam's rushing. Get rid of the read option bullsh*t. It's pure laziness. Cam has an amazing skillset, but we need to limit his running to scrambles and the occasional situational designed run. It will be so much better for the offense and sustaining drives which is something we've had difficulty doing and hurts the defense as well. I actually think under Rivera we've been good at adjusting in game on defense but absolutely horrible at adjusting in game (well and in general) on offense. And that's because of Shula. Ron is loyal to a fault and DG needs to step in and force his hand.

Ummmm you might want to rethink your idea. Our offense has scored 39 TD s and our defense has given up 40. That'd not good when you spend most of your money and draft on defense.

I agree. It'd be hard to justify to Jerry firing a two time coach of the year. IF and I mean IF we fire someone, it will be Shula. Although, I hate to admit, it may be time for Ron to go.

More to it than that.

At the end of the day this sport is a businesses. If the "two time coach of the year" is not getting it done for this team, then Jerry is losing money. So anyone can be fired for the betterment of the business.

No not really. It'd just this year McD has about the same talent to work with as Shula has his whole time here. Rivera is not a defensive guru nor is McD. Give Cam to the Vikes and that guru would win you a ship. Without Cam and Shula this team would be 6-10 every year.

I've been back and forth on weather we should keep Ron or not through this whole season but last nights pussy punt on 4th and 1 was the last straw. Even through our winning seasons his flaws have been called out as a coach, Cam won him a couple coach of the years. That being said I highly doubt he gets the can after this season but if Rivera likes his job as the Panthers head coach then he should get rid of Shula after this season.
